I've decided it's time to put an optic on my SOCOM II but can't decide what I need. I want accuracy out to 300 yards but speed up close. I was looking at an Aimpoint, Eotech but concerned about heat issues, and a 1-4 scope. I need some help picking one.

i dont have a socom II but i put a burris scout on my standard and 200 yrds is easy (as far as the range goes out ). and if you get the right rings its really quick up close. cuz if you buy a pistol scope for them it will change the eye relief as you zoom in. friend did it on his socom 16 and hated it. red dot is kinda redundant on those cuz the iron sights are easy to see anyways....but thats just my two cents

oh its a fixed 2.5 zoom....just fyi

actually the guy he was referring to is me lol.  ya i have a socom 16 and i tried variable pistol scope and eye relief never was quite right.  and when you changed the zoom setting the eye releif changed again.  what i plan on doing is getting the leupold 2.5 scout scope (nothing wrong with the burris scout scope either) and i forget the who makes it but i was going to use a one piece ar flat top scope mount that has a built in 45 degree slant mount and put a micro red dot on the since i wont be able to co-witness the irons.  that way you get the best of both worlds.  me and the guy who posted above shoot 200 yards all day long with his m1a with the burris.  300 wont be any sort of challenge with that setup.

As far as heat issues go.

eotach-  I've seen one stop working while mounted on a AK with an Ultimak rail.

Aimpoint-  I've boiled spit on the rings of my aimpoint  more than a dozen times while mounted on a AK with an Ultimak rail.  Still works and has always worked.  I don't worry about frying an aimpoint.

I'm glad it was mentioned about eye relief changes with variable scopes.  I've been thinkin about a scope for my socom.

i forgot to mention that if you want a variable scope get a sadlack mount and use a standard rifle scope.   as far as heat issues go we havent seen the scout scopes adversly affected by it but i need to point out we dont shoot long periods of rapid fire.  and the mount i was wanting to use is the warne ramp mount if anyone was curious about the setup i was talking about.

I agree with the statement with most pistol scopes, but the Burris pistol scope, 2-7x32 w posi lock, has more eye relief and, for me, does not have this problem. I use it on my Scout Squad with much success. I use a Leupold scout on my Steyr, and while I love it, the gun will outshoot the scope. Point is, the Burris works just as well in the scout configuration. Couple it with a Burris mini holo sight on Burris rings with built in picatinny and it goes from 1 yard to 500 and is still cheaper than an eotech. But, it probably doesn't have the durability.
