I keep seeing M1 barreled receivers pop up at the fun show for $150, not sure if it's a good idea or to pass on the whole scheme of building one a piece at a time.
I'm limited on funds so a piece at a time build would better suit my wallet, of course I could be going about this ass backwards & setting myself up for heartache & pain. I do so want to own a piece of history & since Big "O" has declared a No~Go on the South Korean import of M1s I fear this rifle will never be within my means. So is it worth the $150 or wishful thinking? |
| I saw then at Valley forge didnt check them out.If the reciever isnt pitted bad its worth it. Barrels will be bad for $150.Just check them out real good.I can help you at the march show pick one out.I have a couple good shooter barrels.I can barrel and headspace it for you.I love the garand rifle.Let me know. glad to help someone catch garanditis |

$150.00 is cheap for a Garand barreled receiver. I would suspect either the barrel is trash or the receiver is welded.
It will cost you almost twice as much to build a Garand than to buy one from CMP Only way its worth building one is if you have alot of spare parts already laying around You would also have to buy gauges to check headspace of the bolt and may have to buy several bolts until you find one that headspaces correctly |

| I have the tools and gauges needed to check them out.A welded rec is easy to spot.Yes you can get garands from cmp cheaper.Even there bare rec cost $200.if you want to own a garand start saving or buying now.Parts are getting low.They are reproducing parts for garand now most are dead ringers.Quaility is good but not GI !When you buy 1 there will be more!I have 12 and counting.HRA and post war rebuild SA my fav.If you are still looking in april let me know. |

My guess is these barreled recievers are most likely guys profiting from CMP's program. They're buying rack or field grade guns and parting them out and then selling off the barreled receiver. They're worth more in parts than whole to these cannibalizers. I hate to see this trend but I can't argue with the mathematics.
Also it's expensive to build one up from parts. I did one. I purchased a like new HRA service grade barreled receiver from CMP because at the time there were no HRA SG rifles available. I built it up with mostly HRA parts and it ended up costing over $800 with a DGR commercial walnut stock. I love the rifle but a HRA from CMP is available again for about $600 and is likely a lot more original than my build. Sign up for CMP and buy a service grade. Oh and yes they're like potato chips and you cannot stop at one unless you're well disciplined. I'm looking to have one of each maker, SA, HRA, WRA and the unobtainable IHC. |
