When I was in the Army, I was told when cleaning the M4, that you need to clean the bore by sending the bore brush starting at the chamber and through the muzzle. However, with the way the M1's receiver is elevated, it makes it very difficult to do this unless you insert the rod through the muzzle and attach the bore brush on the other side and pull the rod out.

So is it safe to just clean the bore through the muzzle first and back through the chamber? rather having having to insert the rod though the muzzle and screwing on the bore brush from the other side every time you want to run the brush through the bore?

I would bet that what I was told in the military is a cleaning myth that you must go through the chamber first, in the same direction the bullet goes, but I didn't want to clean in the opposite direction without confirming first. Thanks.

I clean mine from the muzzle and I use the guide so the crown is protected.

Get an M3A1 cleaning tool. It will help you clean the chamber anyway.

i use the Otis system which is great for going chamber to muzzle on any type of action.

well, I would buy one, but I'm pretty broke at the moment so I can't really buy one, but those bore brushes are very cheap and could fill in for now.

I don't have dirty chamber issues.

I insert the rod from the muzzle till it reaches the chamber/action, then screw the brush to it and slowly pull the brush from the chamber to the muzzle while keeping the rod centered in the bore.

Why push the crud from the barrel into the chamber/action of the rifle???

Do the same thing with the patches.

It depends on how YOU like to do things.

With the M16 family it's easy to get access to the chamber side to slide in a cleaning rod.

But, it's aint happening (from the chamber end w/ rod) with the M1/M14 family of weapons.

So IMHO..........

A bore guide or cleaning with a snake or Otis is good.  Then the tried and true cleaning rod is OK too.  Then, you'll have the peanut gallery saying all sorts of bad things about your choosen method IF you use a GI sectioned cleaning rod.  But, when you come down to it..........you're the one buying/paying for the equipment.

And (it has been said) in the end.......

When carefully and properly used even a sectioned cleaning rod will do less damage vs.continued hot and heavy shooting.

BTW........I ain't talking about a high dollar SUPER DOOPER MATCH rifle here.

Aloha, Mark

I use my thumb and forefinger....  All this guide bullsh!t.  c'mon.  FMJ and hot gases will wear your muzzle n' throat before any ill guided cleaning technique....

From their perspective, yeah I'd say it's safe to call it a myth.

With the M1, you have to be very careful with the muzzle crown.  Get a protector.  I've seen a zillion otherwise good M1 barrels that were ruined at the muzzle by cleaning rods.
