How many of you guys use bore snakes to clean your barrels? My M1A is of the standard variety. I've been using a bore snake with a copious amount of CLP. And it just seems to be way to easy to clean. Is it better off to use the rod and brush method? If so, how the hell do you get rod in there?
I've taken this rifle on two range trips so far, and have maybe 90 rounds through it so far (the AR is way cheaper to shoot). And I've yet to figure out how to remove the op rod. I really want to give this rifle an all over cleaning and I cannot get that damn op rod handle off. |
| I've used the Otis kit with good luck on my Garand, and now my NM M1A. It works very well, as I can just feed it in the chamber and out the muzzle, and it's flexible, so it helps big time. Also a cleaning port works really well too, never have to worry about the bolt slamming shut.... I use THIS for a cleaning port, it's very simple, keeps stuff out of the action, and you can still use the chamber brush. |

I tried the bore snake on my standard a couple times and was not impressed. I followed the directions as well as the advice here. After I ran the bore snake through a couple times I cleaned again using tried and true methods and was amazed at how many patches I still had to use.
I would use it at the range for a quick cleaning between groups, but I wouldn't rely on it for sole cleaning. |
