Ok so a week ago I bought a CMP field grade garand and a few can of ammo.  So I went to the range yesterday to shoot her for the first time.  I brought a couple of the bandoleers of the greek ammo.  The first 2 greek clips shot fine without any issues.  After that the 3rd clip I shot 2 rounds from and then after the 3rd the clip partially ejected.  So i shoved it back in and the next round was ok but the round after that it ejected again.  got through the rest of that clip and loaded another clip and it only did it once.  Out of the 2 bandoleers the first 2 clips and maybe 1 or 2 other clips didnt have any issues but all the rest did.  Any kind of help is appreciated.

Try reading here (Chapt 10)............

Aloha, Mark

PS...........(GI spec and all) clips can and have varied throughout the various runs.  Besides the Greek ammo has been packed for over 30+ years.   Then remember, clips were meant to be USED ONCE and left on the battle field.

For those of us that like to "recycle".............sometimes it's just a matter of finding "good ones."

Course that doesn't rule out parts replacement (see above).

Seems to happen a lot with CMP garands.  Replace the clip latch spring, (about $5), it's an easy fix.  Should take about two minutes.

give it a try after that.

These springs are 60+ years old.

Yes, the clip latch spring is one of the "usual suspects."

And, speaking of 60 year olds springs.............

http://www.fulton-armory.com/

Check the site index, M1 parts section........there is a "replacement spring set" ($29.95) in addition to the other springs that can be purchased as singles.

Me........I don't like "HD/over powered springs."  I perfer "regular" replacements (BUT, that's me).

99% of the time its the clip latch spring. Remove the old one, stretch it, replace and fire rifle. If issues went away order new clip latch spring.
Would also be a good idea to replace OpRod spring while you are at it.
I recommend springs from Orion 7 http://www.m1garandrifle.com/Garandparts.htm
Do not use Wolff high power Op Rod springs as they can cause more problems than they help

Ive got a magic clip. Found it at a gun show a long time ago. It has bright orange spots painted all over it.
It always works. It is the only clip ever made that can be used for up to infinity times. Did I mention it is magic?

I guess the fella who painted it had a heck of a time seeing them on the ground.

If you shoot the M1 alot, and plan on getting more of them, get a few extra ej springs and a recoil spring.
Might want to get a clean, new gas plug to keep in the cleaning kit as well.
And an allen wrench for the front sight....

This.

As far as clips wearing out, I think that would take a long time to do. The clip's worst enemy is the common boot. I always pick up each clip immediately so no one steps on them. When I first got into Garands, I bought a huge number of clips. I have lost a few, damaged a few, but have never worn one out.

HTH-

Wolff spring kit bad?  Enlighten me, I just installed a kit in my Garand and certainly don't want to hurt her. Thx. It was the Pro-Spring Kit M1G-900 by Brownells but I thought they were made by Wolff.

Wolff springs are OK with the exception of the Op Rod srping "if" it is extra power (the ones I have seen from Wolff are) It wont hurt your Garand but being a extra stiff spring "may" cause short stroking (Bolt/ Op Rod may not cycle far enough to pick up next round)
I'm not a fan of "extra" power springs JMO

Not necessarily, the 70's era Greek HXP clips have all sorts of problems.  My Garand never had an issue with 60's era HXP, but the 70's clips ejected prematurely every time.  Bought a new clip latch spring and had the same problem of premature ejections.  I contacted the CMP and they sent me new issue clips and guess what no problems.

Not necessarily what ?
I did say 99% not 100%, it can also be  enblocs .The problem enblocs are acually not Greek but marked JMO which I believe is German. I have shot many many thousands of rds with all different year JMO enblocs and never had any problems, although some  people do.  Can also be worn clip latch, follower rod , arm, etc. but a LARGE percentage of the time its the clip latch spring

Never had any issues either.

The clip latch spring has been mentioned as the most likely part to fail, as well as the least expensive to replace.

Clip latch would be the next thing to look at. The chances of multiple bad enblocs is small. You could probably compare clips side by side with a known good clip and see any obvious defect. I seem to remember a rash of similar reports when the Danish M2 came out of the CMP, IIRC the ammo was "snappier" than LC M2 and as a result weak clip latch springs would slip (due to recoil being harder) allowing the enbloc to eject.

I have fired HXP and have not noticed it to be any hotter than LC, I guess it could be. I can vouch for the AMA (danish) being noticeably hotter than LC. I have bought a decent amount of HXP, but am waiting to finish up a large stock of AMA-62 before I change to shooting the greek ammo.

I am betting on the clip latch spring being the culprit...

YMMV-

Thanks for the reply M1G.  She shoots great and with no problems.  As long as its a functioning issue and not a wear and tear issue, thats ok.
Thx again.
