Hey Garand guys,

How common is it to break a firing pin for a Garand?  I took one of mine out this past weekend and shot maybe 50 rounds through it.  When breaking down the rifle, a small metal part fell out in my hand, after carefully inspecting everything, I found out the rear portion of the firing pin broke off.  Anyone have this problem?  It is a CMP rifle.

Also, how difficult is it to replace the pin?  Do you simply remove the extractor and it falls out?

Thanks in advance...

I've never had one break.  My M1A is over 30 years old with a few thousand rounds through it (not an M1 but the firing pins are very similar - just shorter).

Yes, you remove the extractor and the firing pin and ejector will come out of the bolt.  Be careful, the ejector may "shoot" out of the bolt and be hard to find.

I fixed it for you

I have seen some people take the bolt apart in a heavy zip lock bag to keep things from shooting across the room. I point the face of the bolt toward a 4X4 block of wood to catch the ejector.

YMMV

I broke one about a year after I got my DCM M1.  During a match naturally during a rapid-fire string.  Boom. Boom. CLICK. Chamber fresh round.....CLICK.  Chamber another fresh round.......CLICK.  18 years and maybe 5000 rounds later the replacement is still going strong.

Thanks for the replies, I found some pins online and ordered an extra.
