Well after several years of searching, I finaly found an IHC M1 Garand (and at a pawn shop of all places). I have just enough history with Garands to tell that it does not have all original parts. Is there any resource (book or site) out there that one can use to piece together a history of an M1 based on the types of non-original parts, markings or what not?
It is a 4,453,XXX serial number with an LMR barrel dated 5/53 and what looks to be a SA bolt and a WRA trigger guard. I have not broken it down to know anything else yet. Oh and the only mark I can find on the stock is a sans serif "P" on the grip. |

Non IHC parts on a IHC receiver indicate 1of 2 possible causes if not both: 1) Rebuild program. All parts were treated the same in a GI rebuild program and a rebuilt rifle got any serviceable part that was in the parts bin or 2) Cleaning tank mixup. Use to be that GIs would all get together and shoot the crap while cleaning the weapons. Parts from several weapons were dumped into solvent tanks by the unknowing GI and enough parts were fished out by each to complete the rifle later or possible cause #3.....Some of both.
The chance of finding any history on any one given rifle is remote at very best. |
