I just got back from the CMP North store. Got there around 11:30-12:00 with a buddy. They had a lot of Garands out but mostly rack, special, and correct with a rack full of M1D's. They only had a few Service grades. I was going for a SA Service and they had 4 left. I picked the one that measured the best on the muzzle and throat ~ 2.5 and 2 respectively (that is, if I was doing it correctly) It is SN: 5860XXX (which is a later production, correct?) and has mostly SA parts. Has a HRA trigger group that I'm gonna swap with my HRA M1 that has a WWII (I think) SA trigger group. SA barrel and op rod with HRA bolt. The gas plug looks like it says "IHC" and "NHC" or "WHC" (second marking is a little scratched). Looks like most of the metal was reparked because it is nice and dark. Stock looks decent to me with a few gouges and scrapes. How do you tell the manufacturer of a stock? or is that not possible? It has the circle "P" and the eagle just like my HRA but there are no other markings on either. My buddy was looking for a service grade carbine but they only had rack grades (which we knew going in because it said so on the CMP website) but he still enjoyed seeing the CMP for the first time.

Or possibly a HRA stock...depends on the circle P proof. If thereis serifs it is a SA, no serifs it is a HrA.

It was my first trip to CMP to pick out my first (and second) Garand, kinda like your friend.  I went thinking I was going to get a sevice special but for some reason the beat up field grade were calling to me.  I know very little other than what was acceptable ME/TE, I found two FG that had 1.5 ME and 3 TE.  The one is a Springfield 261XXXX, and Bob at the counter said it was a 41 rebarreled in 54 with a Winchester bolt.

The second was all SA '54 vintage.  The stocks on both are beat up and the finish is worn near the muzzle but I kinda like them that way.

I also picked up a Rusty Kimber, and I'll say the only rust I've found is on the extractor and a few speckles around the rear apeture (sp?).

Here is the all the newly aquired CMP goodies.  I thought my wife was going to kill me when I showed her the reciept (I went up planning on ONE rifle and a couple tins of ammo) but she actually got choked up over seeing a gun that  could have served her grandfather in WWII.

JKnight, did you notice the truck by the enterance with the BFL (in lower pic) when you entered?   That was me.

How funny, I was there today too.  I was leaving as I saw someone picking up one of the service grades to buy.

I ended up with a field grade that had a ME just under 1, but a beat up stock.  But hay, it just looks like they threw it down the drive way for me, right?

It was too bad they didn't have and ammo in boxes on hand, just the 192rd clips.

safe1... I know I saw you leaving cause I saw your cart with the two shooting matts.

I was there today too, along with my brother in law and wife who are also members here.  It was an awesome experience (my first time).  I left with a very nice SA field grade with 1943 numbers and he left with another field grade SA of low number and a nice carbine.  I should have got more, but funds are tight.

It almost brings a tear to my eye seeing all these garands finding good homes. Great job guys. I think I see a trip North in the near future.

Thanks for the responses guys. What exactly are "serifs" ?? I can post pics in a couple days of both stocks with the circle P if anyone could identify them for me. Safe1, my buddy actually pointed out your truck (he's also a member here). Good find on your rifles! Hope you enjoy them Pretty cool that there were a lot of us there the same day

serifs are like little things attached to the letter to make it look fancy, it's just another font. If your P looks like this, P then it is HRA. If it looks fancier, it is sa. This cartouchescan help you.
