I have an M1A new in box from 1994 thats receiver is marked "Springfield Sportster"  I've never seen another like it.  It has a TRW barrel and TRW Op rod.   It came with an HR-R trigger group, but I replaced it with a TRW Trigger group.  All new and unfired.  Any collector interest in such a item?   Any info on the "Sportster" markings?

This may be one of the special ordered recievers/ rifles, some had a persons name for the s/n vs. having numbers. There was one on GBroker awhile back. According to SAInc lore, for a short time you could special order/ customize the markings.

Can you post a pic? I bet Different would like to have a digital copy too.?

Here's a pic of the receiver markings.  It's not a sportster it's a Sportsmaster

I'm also going to go with custom markings from the factory - I've seen a couple of these pop up from time to time on various forums.  I don't think there's any 'collector's' value in them, but it doesn't mean it's not a mighty fine rifle nonetheless.

regalgseguy, you have a Sportmaster.  It was a limited edition M1A rifle.  Yours is the highest serial number I'm aware of for this model.  AFAIK, most were made in 1991.  They were assembled with a walnut stock or a gray laminate stock with an integral cheek rest.

Was this an attempt to make it appear to have a "Legitimate Sporting Use" ??? I suspect that is what Colt did with the "Sporter" rifle formerly known as Prin... I mean, AR-15.

Great information,  Thanks much!  I believe my SN#  date to be 1994

Hey Different.  My particular rifle came with a black synthetic stock.  The one with the rough sanpaper finish.  I swaped it out for a walnut stock from another M1A .
