The front sight blade was was almost halfway off the base, and the point of impact was still at the edge of the 2'X3' NRA target. He packed it up in disgust, and never said another word about it. I have no idea if he sent it back, or what he did with it. Assuming you get one that functions properly, my understanding is that they are mixmasters, albeit refinished, good-looking units. I have no idea if each and every part is examined prior to refinishing. You also get a nice wooden case. Being mixmasters, and refinished and all, their collector's value is very low, and unlikely to increase. I doubt if you will ever get anything close to your money back if you decide to sell in the future. As suggested above, you could spend much less money at CMP and get a MUCH better, more collectible rifle. It might not look quite as pretty, nor come in a nice wooden case, but you would have a lot of that $1500 still in your pocket. |

The only place to buy a Garand is CMP, period.
You know it will have all USGI parts and has been checked over by their techs. It's also a lot less money. Hell, I got an H&R Correct Grade that looks like it has never seen a round for $900. Unfortunately, those are gone, but check out the Special Grade for $995, but those aren't all GI given that they have a new commercial barrel. They're overpriced. My prices are somewhat dated:
CMP rack grade : $295 Dean's Gun restoration package with match barrel, trigger job and Wenig stock approx $955 Total $1250 That was before they started offering the Special grade, if I already didn't restore 2 Garands I would go with a special grade. I know it's heresy, but I prefer the "restored" look. My third rifle is a service grade and I'm keeping that one as I received it.

I guess the only thing more stupid than paying $1,500 for a Miltech Garand would be paying that much for a SA Inc Garand. At least the Miltech would have a USGI reciever Agreed. The last time I spent that much on an M1 was on a CMP Collector grade 5.7mil SA.
