Well I have looked for a Subsonic load for my M1A and found allot of info but no info on the M1A.

I started out with 10.5 grns of Trail boss and worked my way down in .5 increments.

I checked for keyholeing at 10,25,50 yards. All were good

I ended up settling on 9 grains of Trail boss with a Hornaday 170 grn round nose flat base for the 30-30.

I full length resized some Cavim mil surp brass.

Bullet depth was set at the canuler

Sorry I don't have a crono.

Gas valve was off. Subs won't cycle anyway.

Next I will shoot it for groups

Nice!  Can I assume at the end of the vid that the unsuppressed is a supersonic?  I just didn't see the weapon eject is the only reason I ask.

Yes the unsuppressed is Supersonic. The only shot of Supersonic ammo with the can on is in the beginning. All others are Subsonic

Is there a reason you used the round nose bullet with flat base as apposed to the 150gr or 168MK ? Is there a problem using boattail bullets on sub sonic loads ? I would like to load some sub sonic using the correct bullets if possible.

not sure if this will help or not, but you may want to pick up an old lyman or speer reloading manual (40's/50's vintag)

I have several that list loads using unique, and 2400 and a few other powders for reduced loads w/ both jacketed and cast loads,

only drawback is no modern powders, obviously,

I used the round nose and flat base for stability the boat tail bullet was made to stabilize at higher velocity's.

Some of the info I found recommended using the flat base so no gas would escape around the base as it exits the bore and cause the bullet to wobble.

As far as the powder I wanted to use Trail Boss because it fills the case more than 40% and with the 9 grns it is more like 55%.Some info I found cautioned about using loads where the case was filled with less than 40% causing a secondary explosion.

Great questions I will try to get some pics up of the ammo today.

I use the Speer 170 flatty and 10.2 gr Trail Boss.
Gives me 1030-1060 fps from a 24 inch barrel.

Now I understand the need for a flat base bullet. I'm looking at the Sierra flat base Spitzers. Would the spire point bullets be OK if they have the flat base ?
I see you guys use the 170gr bullets but, would the 150gr be suitable (with slightly less powder) or would it make a difference ? Also, what would be the max range for the subsonic ?

Norecoil......I see that you have the flash suppressor installed (or muzzle brake) when shooting with the can. Could you say who makes such a setup for the M14 ?
Here's another of your vids (I think) which is where I see the muzzle attachment better.

This is the mount http://www.yhm.net/store/Sound_Accessories.html

It is a YHM can.

As for the round nose I don't see where it would make a difference and I haven't seen any info for or against.

i have only shot for load test at this point and will shoot it for groups @ 100 yds after the new year.

I use a reduced load in a 1903 with SMK, (boat tail) with out any problems,
got the load from an old high power guy (RIP) years ago,

22gr of 2400 under a 168SMK,.  and I've found similar loads in old manuals,

great at 100yrs,  not so great past that,

I've read conflicting stories on the secondary explosion phenom, (but not discounting any of it either)

as always use caution, YMMV etc etc
