Wow.  I was worried I would not be able to get a CMP M1 before they ran out.  This makes me very happy.

this sounds to be some of the best news possible.
I just got into the CMP thing a year ago, and I now have 2 M1 Garands.  I keep telling myself, I will go for a carbine next, but another garand may happen just because of how nice they are sounding.

I guess I am surprised that no carbines seem to have been shipped over.

I went down to Anniston when they still permitted volunteers to come in and help out.  Orest took me on a tour of the grounds.  I could not imagine them ever selling out of Garands.  No joke, I got into two warehouses that were floor to ceiling with boxed Garands.  There were other buildings there but those were the two that he led me through.  It was amazing.  I really wish they still had the volunteer program.

Fucking NIRVANA!

Im changing my priorities!   Im buying a Collector Grade SA or HRA as a safe queen for posterity as soon as they are available and adding to my ammo stash exponentially.  Hopefully Orest places better limits on purchases and curtails the resale guys on rifles and ammo.  I like to shoot my M1's but was worried that my meager 2500 rds would be expensive to replace..

And just when I thought I was done buying M1's.  I regretted passing on the 1903's several years back and the collector grade M1's recently and Im not missing out this time and 70 million rounds of ammo should last several years if rationed correctly..

I do take issue with GCA guys buying up the minty NIB rifles, not that I would buy one but  Im sure there are some regular guys with a few dollars that want one and these guys buy 20 at a time

In any event, this is great news, iof you dont have an M1 you need one ASAP.

Going rate for WWII era examples run ~$100 on the market, not sure what variant these are but should be less than current retail prices out there..

So 3 years of ammo, give or take.

Look for the forum posts from Monday or so.  This was announced at the GCA convention at Anniston.   Some other news:
170,000 bayonets will be offered
5-8 years of Garands left as of now.
M1D's and M1C's will be offered.
A few hundred NIW Garands were found while the GCA was unpacking rifles.-$3500 each
Many extremely nice Garands were unpacked.  Late HRA's and 5.4 and 5.8 SA's
Good times ahead for at least a few years.

I saw the Garands as I worked unpacking them.  The late rifles are superb with very little wear.  If you want a shooter, don't miss out on this group of rifles.  Orest said they would probably go on sale at the first of the year, if not a bit sooner.  They are a "done deal".  What's not a done deal is the ammo.  An agreement was made, but it's not final until it's in Anniston.  IMHO, this will be the last of the "Good old days".

Got an Inland service grade, one of the first batch of the ones mailed out.  Couldn't have asked for more, for $500.  The wood is in great condition, used but no major dings or dents.  The finish is excellent.  Its not a mint condition rifle, or a collectors piece, but a very nice shooter and it has ran 100% so far on steel case Wolf.  The only problem with these, is that even the cheap steel case ammo is now expensive, and it is so fun to shoot, you don't want to put it down.

The last I heard was that the rifles were a done deal and the ammo deal is still in the works. They do not like to make statements about deals in progress until they are done. I believe this stems from a deal that went south a few years ago when too many people started a shitstorm about it. When it is in the bag we will hear official word on  it. Just keep your fingers crossed and wait.

I certainly hope the ammo rumor turns out to be true and that the cost is similar to what it has been.  I had previously been planning a second M1 purchase and a pile of ammo.  However, if the ammo goes up I might sell what I have and move on.

CMP is the debil!

Decided to finally buy a Garand... bought one here on the EE... was disappointed in it.  So folks suggested I go the CMP route.  I'm not patient enough to order and wait (and I heard you either get a gem or a turd when trusting the picking to someone else) so I made the road trip to North Shore - 20 hours driving round trip.  Came home with not one Garand... but two, plus a barreled receiver, plus another M1 Carbine, plus 6 cans of ammo (should have bought my allotted 10, they announced two days later no more mail order).  Well then I realized I had next to no carbine ammo, and CMP had none and the shops wanted $35/50 rounds... so I found a deal and bought 1,350 rounds.  Figured I'd reload after that.  Well I decided I loved my Carbines so much that I wanted one of every manufacturer... since then I have purchased an IBM, Quality Hardware and a gorgeous Inland which may or may not replace my Blue Sky Import Inland, plus the Saginaw I picked up at CMP.  Oh, and the new Inland came with 1,850 rounds of ammo... so now I'm pushing 3,500 rounds.  Plus I needed magazines and slings and oilers and pouches... all within the past 30 days!

CMP is the debil!

Make it stop!  Oh wait... I have a Bavarian Forestry Police M1 Carbine with flip sights shipping any day now.

Ammo is out there, gunbroker is flooded with with.  You can buy a replacement gas plug and shoot commercial 30-06 without issue.  CMP will be getting more ammo, count on it and you can reload to M2 ball specs.

It should be flooded with what they want for it. I would bet that was  one reason a limit of 10 cans was put in place. Guys would buy a truck load then JACK up prices. Around here $145 a can is the normal price at the shows.

Believe me, I am pissed at CMP for how they handled the ammo.  Let people buy truckloads for resale and then limit honest shooters.  Anybody with half a brain had to realize what would happen when you offer it so cheap.  I would like to see a 2,000 round per year limit.  If you need more than that, reload or buy on the secondary market.  I have the same problem with people who buy $500 Garands and resell them for $1,000 knowing it is a violation of the purchase agreement they signed at time of purchase.

Just wait for all the people to jump on you for saying that. Moaning and groaning how we should have bought more if we wanted more, we're commies for going against the free market, if they could afford 50 cans of ammo a day they should be able to buy 50 cans a day...blah blah blah stupid dippy motherfuckers.

Its a private organization. We all signed an agreement saying we wouldnt resell. I dont have much money. But you dont see me buying a few cans and reselling to get MORE money. I hold up my end of the bargain. Why do so many people here think it's ok for some gunshow asshole reseller to buy up truckloads of ammo and resell it?

I agree with you 100%, but I wont get into answering that question because it belongs in GD really.

It's not all a bad deal.  The CMP does have lots of nice rifles now, plus bayonets to sell for everyone.  You have to believe the CMP made out like bandits selling those last years worth of rifles and ammo.
There could be a method to the madness afterall, but they wont admit anything for opsec reasons.

Good news but it sounds like from the description of the new rifles that few will be affordable to the average joe.

Sounds like most of the rifles were either correct or collector grade.  I'm sure what few turn out to be rack or service grade will sell out quickly.  The bayonets sound cool.  Would like to get a few more for the collection.

I'm sure after these rifles are gone the CMP will have an endowment almost as large as Harvards!

CMP's sales staff are masters of creating "panic" to increase sales and clear out stuff. Seen it over and over again. All they have to do is drop a hint that supplies (name it) are getting low and the orders flood in. They're great at creating pre-order demand in the same manner. Not knocking them, just an observation based on years of dealing with them.

What you are describing is a classic example of selling items below a price that the market will bear.  If they increased the price of the items that are currently flying out the door to a more market-driven price, then sales volume would go down, and the task of providing the items would be more manageable.

Personally, and taking into consideration the mission of CMP, I wouldn't be averse to some reasonable mechanism limiting individuals to purchasing up to, say, 3K rds per year, just to pick a number.  That might make things tough on the dealers and MG types, but the stated goals of CMP don't seem to cater to their businesses/hobbies in the first place.  The ammo dealers will have to refine their business model without artificially cheap ammo, and the MG blasters will have to learn to reload.

The idea behind the CMP is to promote civilian marksmanship, and that is best done, IMHO, with a great number of individuals being involved.  A few wealthy businesses or individuals buying an inordinate amount, either for resale or personal use doesn't exactly coincide with the stated goals of CMP.
