So I have a friend that wants to do so "training" loading a Garand. Obviously he doesn't want to use live ammo sitting in his living room. Would Snap Caps be acceptable to use for this. I have also seen plastic ones that are much cheaper. Would they work as well as the aluminum ones?

Get the aluminum ones.
Brownells also offers "Action Proving Dummies"
These aren't snap caps, they are just dummy rounds that approximate the weight and dimensions of a live round for check cycling a weapons action.

If he wants to dey fire the Garand no snap caps needed. Go ahead and dry fire, it will not harm your rifle

He was interested in loading/unloading the clips into the gun. He is probably worried about Grand Thumb .

Tell him to go to the range so he can do some training to hit targets with it at the same time.

Otherwise he's gonna spend $65 on A-Zoom snap caps....the fear of M1 thumb is irrational.  Keep the hand bladed parallel to the gun, palm towards the stock.  Voila.

Its impossible to get Garand thumb while loading the Garand. Your thumb cant get between the bolt and the reciver as the bullet is in the way!
The only way to get it is puttings digets where they dont belong when the rifle is empty and then the bolt closes.
If he wants to check function you dont want snap caps but dummy rds.
Somone who reloads could make you some up easily

Ditto the reload/dummies. Simple as pie to have a reloader make them up. I'd remove the old primers so you are sure which ones the dummies are

You'd have to be a narcoleptic to get bit while loading the rifle.  He's more likely to get bit while monkeying with it.  Always give the oprod a yank before you stick yo' digits in.
