So I have lost my .308 virginity and I’m now trying to figure out what a good price is for .308 ammo. I just purchased a Polytech M14. I have found prices from .50 – Wolf and Brown Bear - all the way to $1.00 - match grade. Any recommendations on good places to get discount ammo? I know of the sights like Aim, Ammotogo, etc. I think I’ll eventually start reloading, but for now I need to get some bullets so I can start shooting! Has anyone used non-brass casings in their M14s before? What is the consensus on this process?

"good price" is a relative term.  surplus used to be a good deal, but now it's just as expensive as newly manufactured - in most cases.  if you can find a battlepack - 200 rounds - for between 120.00 -140.00, that is about the going rate right now.  there really aren't any deals out there because everyone knows what it's worth.  i personally avoid all of the russian ammo - brown bear, silver bear, etc.  steel cased is not good for the m14 type rifle.  the best deal lately has been british radway surplus, it flooded the market recently and prices were reasonable most places, between 0.55-0.65 per round.  i shoot mostly winchester q3130, but i bought most of mine when prices were better.

If your looking for decent ammo, wal-mart usually sells Federal Power-shock for $13.00 a box of 20, its a 150gr sp but it works really well in my standard, usually 2moa with it.

Do the surplus rounds (african, british, etc) shoot pretty well? What kind of MOA can you get?

what I get (MOA) and what someone else gets probably will be different,

the few rounds of surplus .308 I hae shot all did ok,, but not as good as a decent handload, or USGI ball
but that's my gun, yours will be different,

buy a small lot of several types and try, then try to find larger lots of that particular load,

but with the going rates for .308 it may be cheaper to start reloading,

I'd usually agree, but good luck trying to find primers or powder. . . . .

Here you go,

I'm glad I'm not getting into the 308 game now.  I have enough brass, bullets, primers to last me awhile.  Just too expensive.  The last time I bought 308 ammo, it was .10 cents a round delivered! That was like in 04-05 ish IIRC.

Just an FYI, but the M14S is a 7.62x51 NATO chambered rifle.  I would not shoot commercial .308 in it due to pressure differences and headspace.  Many M14S rifles will fail a .308 headspace test but pass a 7.62x51 headspace test.
