My police department has just recieved two winchester M14's from the government. They came with very cheap plastic looking stocks. I am a M-16 trained Marine and know absoultly nothing about these rifles (Well before my time). I have been tasked with setting up one as a sniper type primeter rifle. They have also given me a new government supplied Leupold scope. Now where do I go from here. Are there any gunsmiths that you know of that could set the rifle up for under say 700 bucks? Someone that I can trust with a US Government rifle? Any info would be greatly appreciated. <br />

rlp 511,

Our department has a few m14's.  Their purpose is to bridge the gap between ar15's and the bolt rifle's.  They are bedded in McMillan fiberglass stocks and with heavy match barrels.  Have you figured out what you want to have done to the rifles?  I would think that all you really need is a new medium or heavy barrel plus a bedded stock (and if there‘s any money left over a trigger job, but some USGI triggers are pretty good just broken in).  My trigger group is USGI SA.  All I did to it was replace the trigger pins with SEI tool steel pins and a David Tubb trigger spring and my trigger pull is quite nice.  $700 plus labor may be a tight fit, depending on what barrel you want.  A Krieger medium weight DMR profile barrel’s runs bout $340.  LRB sells a Criterion barrel (criterion is part of Krieger) medium weight DMR profile chrome lined for $280.  Both have a reputation for outstanding accuracy.  McMillan stocks will run bout $450-$550 unless you can find a deal on them.  Check out the M1A, M2A, M3A, M3A adjustable, and M3A tactical on their website:

Also, double check that there isn’t a M14 smith near you.  They are few and far between but they are out there.  Good luck.
