What ( if any ) is the differences between the walnut stocks offered on the new production Springfield standard M1A's and a USGI walnut stock. I know the USGI has the selector notch. But is one bigger than the other? A better fit?

The commercial walnut stocks used by SA Inc. (supplied by Boyds) have greater outside dimensions. IOW, they are fatter than USGI stocks. Generally uglier as well, IMO.

Here's a Boyd's walnut stock on my PolyTech.  It is a slight bit wider than the USGI units but not much.

On most of the SAInc stocks I have found that they taper down to the butt plate but are wider and are usually alot wider at the front stock ferrule than the USGI stocks.... some like the larger dimensions and they have a more sporting firearm finish too. I have one that has nice grain, color and finish.... but I still prefer the slimmer USGI profile. And a USGI synthetic for range and nasty weather work...

I have a USGI stock on the way from the EE. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is so I'll have to wait and see. For the price I'm not going to complain. Either way, if the USGI doesn't work out I'll probably get a boyd's. I only have access to a 200 meter range so I'm not too worried about the accuracy issue some people talk about with the wood stocks. This rifle is just going to be a light use recreational shooter.
