I've been tossing around the idea of purchasing a Socom, and I was just looking for a little info before I drop a boatload of money.

What kind of accuracy can a guy expect at 100, 200, 300 yards?

How much for a cheek riser?

Is there any other rails a guy can add to the regular Socom with getting a Socom II?

Thanks.

I have a pair of socoms.  (One of which my brother now wants as his.)

They shoot really nice.  No barrel lift at all.  They do lean into you a little bit.

I don't have optics on anything yet (my brother was suppose to get the optics when I got the rifles, but that never happened).

He claims it will be good out to 800yards.  Since he is/was in the army, I think he means you can hit the target at 800, not super grouping.

With iron sights, I am very happy with the 100+ yard groups I lay down... but I don't think you are interested in that.

I have been looking for a pistol grip stock for it, but it looks like an AR10 would be about the same price as the stock!  So expect pricey add ons.

I have never taken it to a range; just a gravel pit up in the woods( max range 100-140yrds (range finder)) in that distance this weapon is superior to any firearm I have shot in terms of swing/ rate of fire in its caliber. I had a m1a loaded sold it for the socom16, I thought it was a mistake until I got out side with a battle pack. You will love this rifle. I have heard at greater distance the weapon suffers a little, if you want a long distance rifle get a M1a, you want a awsome rifle with in the confines of avrage combat engagement(100yd)get a socom.

I've got an EoTech 512 on my SOCOM 16. With surplus ammo, it will cloverleaf 3 shots at 50 yards. Its a great gun and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good fast handling .308.

I have a Socom and a Scout. Off the bench it's not to diffucult to hit a 18" steel plate at 300 yards.

Three to four MOA.  And that is real MOA, not "I get 1moa with my WASR-10 Romanian AK47 and cheap ammo all day long."

I love my SOCOM II. Haven't had a chance to shoot it with my Leupold yet, but the iron sights are some of the best I've ever used. It'll shoot as good as the person pulling the trigger.

I have a Aimpoint M-2 on my SOCOM.  It is the best quick action carbine I have.

With good ammo, you can punch ragged holes at 75 yards.  I'm still trying to find that "dialed-in" ammo reciepe to make cloverleafs at 100.  It's not a rifle for benchrest comp or 600 yard precision shots, but it does what it does very well inside 300yds and I have no doubt it can hold it's own beyond that even though it's gonna bow to dedicated long range precision rifles at extended ranges.

It's my deer rifle right now 'cuz it's short enough to swing inside a blind.  Great woods, SHTF rifle.  Also, with the 5-round mag, everyone always thinks it's a Tanker model Garand, making it a tad more "politically correct".

I've got a 2.5x scout scope on the forward mount and I love it.  I've heard people complain that it's a heavy rifle (moreso than an AR, I'll admit) but I've carried around the woods all day and you get used to it quick.

12" plate @ 200 yards with irons is no problem.

Thinking about getting an aimpoint though.

Where did ya'll get the SOCOM's?

Looking for a SOCOM 16, but don't want the ripoff $1800+ prices out there.

I paid about 1650, out the door, each for two from a brand name sporting good shop.  It was a "special" situation due to some other gun related complaining of mine and ended with, "ok, you want me as a customer, what price can you give me on 2 of those?"  (My brother has since claimed one and we will see if I get fully paid for it, or it may have cost me a whole lot more!)

However, I have since (post election) seen them at gun shows NIB on tables for very high 1500s sticker+tax, etc.  But, I only buy things I can't get elsewhere at gun shows.  I like a brick shop to complain at if something goes wrong.

I would tell you don't pay over 1650 out the door at a gun show, but I have noticed that where I live, even a few miles can be the difference of a lot of money right now due to crazy demand.  I have been to 3 wal-marts and only 1 had the 22LR ammo I like in stock, so I bought all of it they had today, about 2K rounds worth.    (Ironically, my buying all of it only contributes to the ammo shortage!)

What it comes down to, is if you want it right now, you have to pay for it or find a used one.  They are nice rifles, but an AR-10+lots of goodies=1 socom.  I wished I had ordered 3 AR-10s for those 2 socoms last summer and flipped 1 for a socom now!  But, who knew?

Bought mine out of a place in Virginia Beach, VA.

Can't remember the name for the life of me but it's on Indian River Road.  A lot of USN and USMC guys shop there.  I wasn't even in the market for a .308, let alone a SOCOM, but they had one on the wall for $1150

I may have been a broke-ass E-5 at the time, but that was too good to pass up.  Man, I'm glad I didn't

Stupid question I guess, but... How much louder is a Socom than a standard M1A?  I had an AR with a mini-y comp and would never consider it for defense purposes because it was so loud it was almost disorienting.

I have a Standard and a SOCOM.  I can't say how much louder the SOCOM is, but it's noticeable.  You should still be able to fire a SOCOM in a shtf situation with no hearing protection without any problems though.

For me the Socom is considerably louder than my full size M1A. The first time I fired my socom I got through one magazine and had to double up with foamies under my earmuffs. I probably could have continued with one layer of ear pro but for comfort's sake I went two deep.

As for cost I paid ~$1500 in 2006. Totally worth it.

I just found myself a used SOCOM yesterday that one of the guys that works at the gun shop that I go to is going to be selling soon.  I am pretty sure he said it was a GEN I.  How are the GEN I SOCOMs and what is the difference from the GEN I to the GEN II?
Thanks

you mean a SOCOM16 vs. a SOCOMII?
the SOCOMII comes with a heavy rail on the front, thats the only difference.
if you're looking for a SOCOM16 the older, the better.
the older ones have real USGI stocks on them, the newer ones have Springfield made stocks that you can scrape the paint off of with your fingernail.
I've also seen them come without SA trigger groups and magazines.
also the older ones have much nicer parkerizing... I've seen about half a dozen late model SOCOMs with bare metal spots on their receivers.
