Will an Aimpoint Micro T/H1 co-witness with the iron sights on a socom16 using the factory mount?

Anyone using this ultimak rail system? Have you noticed how hot the factory barrel mount gets? That's why I ditched mine, it was creating a serious mirage in my iron sight picture. I think you can get co-witness if you use a Burris fast fire, but dont quote me on that because I don't remember if it worked on mine or not. But, the fast fire is only paralax free out to 50 yards. If I was going to do a micro I would just use a Larue QD low mount and plan on QD'ing it if the micro ever went down (which by the way I have a brand new Larue micro low mount for sale in the EE). If this is a SHTF type setup, I would use a 550 tie-down so if you had to QD it you wouldn't lose the aimpoint. 
I talked to Larue about making an aimpoint mount for this situation, where it would have about 1/2" of clearance under it so the iron sights could be used. They said, "Umm, thanks for the idea", and that was it. They also blew me off on my Benelli M4 idea, but that's another can of worms. And here's a picture of the fast fire on top of my scope, which has nothing to do with your question.

bco: thanks for the input. I'll be making a decision soon. I'm either going to go with a micro, or a trijicon tripower. I'll most likely run one of these off the factory rail with a QD ring of some sort. I drop a few pics in when I get set up.

Factory mount? No. However, I lifted these pics of the net some time ago and apparantly the Ultimak rail plus an Aimpoint Micro gives you this...

As others have already weighed in, the springfield mount on the SOCOM will position the Aimpoint too high to cowitness with the irons. However, the ultimak rail will achieve exactly what you are looking at. I have tried both the aimpoint micro and a regular aimpoint in this configuration....I decided to go with a regular aimpoint as the dot is smaller and my opinion that lenscaps are awkwards with the micro....

It has been an unusual year for snow....since that photograph was taken we have received about another foot. These past few days though we've also had unusually warm weather....the big melt is on and the roads are unbelievably sloppy.
I once checked out an aimpoint micro on a rooster33 mount (similar to the springfield scout mount, however about 1/3 the rail space)...at about 30 rounds the aimpoint micro was smoking out the adjustment ports!! I had run a standard aimpoint in this configuration for years and had never experienced anything like that kind of heat buildup. The little aimpoint got so hot that I was worried some of the soldered connections might melt...needless to say I changed it out and returned back to my m3 2moa. The Ultimak has many times more surface area....sufficient such that even when the gas cylinder is smoking hot after a 50 round rapid fire session I can still touch the handguard without immediately burning my hands. I have no reservations about heat buildup with the ultimak. Additionally, I have neither experienced any loosening of the mounting hardware nor a shfft/wandering of zero as the system warms up when firing. I've been running my rigs this way for about 4 months with biweekly range trips....no zero issues at all. Brobee |

I just landed my tripower of off the EE this morning from another board member. Quick question: I'm an avid reloader. I have almost 500 SMK 168's. Out of curiosity, what are you running through your socom, and what's it print like at 100yds. Thanks |

I'm not running a socom...up here in Canada anything with a barrel less than 18.5 inches long is considered one rung more evil than a regular rifle and subject to some pretty restrictive rules. My M1A type rifle is built on a Norinco receiver, a factory 18.5 inch LRB chrome lined barrel, and the rest of the parts off a TRW M14 imported from Israel way back in the day (our government later prohibited what they call "converted autos" which flooded the M1A market with M14 parts taken off the newly "evil" M14 receivers...but I digress...).
Pretty much all my rifles are fed either surplus or handloads....my current load is a 155gr sierra HPBTM Palma bullet pushed with H4895, CCI standard large rifle primer, and massively prepped PMC brass (crimp removed, primer pocket recessed, small base full length resize, trim, inner and outer mouth chamfer...it takes FOREVER...groan!). All of my rifles shoot this less than 3 MOA but one of them prints less than an inch with this load. Brobee |
