Guys , I have a CMP garand that was bought around 91 , it has a 64 dated barrel.

I don't have any gauges to check it out with , The problem that I am having with it is it will shoot 2-3 rounds really good , and then the 4 one will go some what wild.

2-3 and maybe even the fourth round will be within 1MOA and then it seems to throw one or 2 . It does this with any ammo that I have loaded and even some match ammo that I had.

I was wondering what is wrong ?? any thoughts ??? It has shown this same behavior with more that one experienced shooter .

If the barrel was shot out wouldn't it be wild all the time ??

Could be a lot of things;

-handguards fit too tight and pressure building with barrel heating.
-op rod rubbing on stock or rubbing inside of stock ferrule
-poor stock fit
-loose trigger guard locking action
-loose sight aperature

best thing I could suggest is to pick up a book for tuning up garands, there are a few stickies over at the cmp I believe that discuss tuning/accurizing your M1.

or find someone in your area who has a lot of knowledge on the M1 and could go through it with you

good luck

hello
check your gas plug under your barrell it should be either a big phillips or a big flat head , make sure its tight some times they work themselves lose and that will throw off a shot . (happened to me ) let us know how you make out

so, how does it do after EIGHT shots? just a thought.

im no marksman, though i can get 1/2 groups from my m1A with scope / handloads / 3" groups with my m1 iron sights / surplus ammo.

but i do often find myself wondering what the hell went wrong with that shot. different cheek rest, flyer, etc.

id say if you consistently get 3 good ones and one bad one, maybe its you making the bad one.

i often screw up my own groups. but i find with surplus ammo- maybe you have a round or two   thats off weight or bad powder charge,

With a barrel that new it is unlikely an issue with the barrel specifically.  The best thing I did for my M1's was to lightly peen the barrel splines so the gas cylinder was tight.  I can shoot some nice groups with Greek HXP and a sling.  They are not gonna shoot High master scores but it will definitley cover a man all the way out.

Look it up, there are several ways to do it.  Go lightly and give it whirl at the range.

Thanks guys for the thoughts .

I am just convinced that is not shot out , I have a WWII pick up that will shoot more consistantly althought a much larger group , The barrel in it looks to be somewhat frosted .

My brother owns a IH in which the barrel looks more like a sewer pipe that a rifle barrel and it will shoot groups with the holes touching at 100yds (it opens up considerably at the longer distances )

The CMP rifle that I am writing about has the best looking barrel of any of these , it shoots the best , by that I mean the smallest groups , but it is the flyers that we just cannot figure out .

I will look at some of the points you guys brought out , It is not the rear sight , as I have changed that to a Match and the front also . It had the issue before the sight change and after as well.

I think the trigger guard fits well enough into the stock and have not checked the gas cylinder or the op rod for fit ( it works so I just shoot it )

It does have one of the large later stocks on it , and it seems to fit pretty well , will check the hand guards out .

I will let you know what I find , do some more shooting with it and report back,

Thanks ...............

Read this: Trouble with 3 shot groups. What are you defining as a "flyer"? I have a hunting rifle that does what you are describing on the 3rd shot every time. Shots 1 and 2 will be nearly through the same hole, and shot 3 will be about 2-3moa left. If I put 5 or 10 total rounds on that target I get a group that tends to show itself between the first 2 shots and the third one. I imagine there is a mechanical cause for this but I have know idea what it is or where to start, and the rifle suits my needs as is, which is why I haven't fixed it.
