I have a pre ban M1A that I bought years ago in of all places "California".  When I was on Recruiting duty in New Mexico, I had a Krieger Stainless heavy 1-10 barrel put on for a grand total of $500.00, now my problem is getting the op rod off, my garand is a cinch, cause all I have to do is pull, cant, and lift, but with the M1A, it won't do it, I am thinking it is the barrel that is in the way, since the barrel is thick towards the reciever, any suggestions on this, I need to get the bolt out so that I can clean it, but it is hard when you can't get the op rod out..........HELP!

With the action removed from the stock, spring removed & muzzle away from you and right side up:  Pull the op rod back all the way.  As you slide it forward from full lock hold upward tension on the op rod handle.  You should feel a slight catch-that's the sweet spot.  From there you will need to pull out and up in a kind of twisting motion.  Your thumb should be on the tip of the op rod handle and your index finger should be as far under the handle (towards the receiver) as you can get.
Now slide it back and forth slightly while maintaing that twisting pressure.
If it's never been removed it will be a bit tough.
Some recommend prying with a small screwdriver-my new Socom didn't require anything additional for the 1st disassembly and it has become easier since then.
If you use something to pry with wrap it with a bit of tape.

What he said.

Instead of prying, I clamp the receiver in a padded vise for stubborn cases.

I did just that, all the way back, lift and twist and it popped out, I can't figure it out, I have done it numerous times before the barrel change, I tried the pry method before, but I quit before I broke something, thanks for the help guys.

Not meaning to hijack, but my oprod comes off very easily.  I can put a slight amount of pressure out and up while pulling back on the oprod and it will jump the track when it gets to the slot.  I'm concerned this may happen some day when I'm chambering a round and need to fire the rifle quickly.

Should I mic the tab on the oprod first?  I assume there is a spec for it.

FWIW- ser. no is 43,xxx

For the OP you just need to find the sweet spot, push up and out.  It will get easier the more times you do it.  For JoshD, eventually your oprod will come out on it's own maybe while firing and then it will be time for a new one.
