I want to order a CMP Garand, not sure if I should spend $$$$$$$$$$$$ on the really nice ones, or buy the cheapo one and have a new stock, new barrel and possibly refinish job done to it.

md308,

Re CMP M1's....

The "really nice" Correct Grade ones go for $950....

By the time you take a Service Grade at $600 and buy a new barrel ($200), have it installed and headspaced ($50-$100), put on a new set of wood ($100-$130), and have all the metal refinished ($100)......

Well, you do the math......   What are you saving???

By the way..... there is certainly nothing wrong with a Service Grade M1 for $600.  Most of them are just as good a shooter as the "really nice" Correct Grades that go for $950.

Best regards,
Swampy

I haven't bought one yet that needed a new barrel.  Most of them can outshoot their buyers.  It may not be pretty when you get it.  Tear is down, clean up the metal, clean up the stock, Wipe the metal parts down with an oily rag.  Wipe the stock down with some tung oil.  Put it all back together.  Familiarize yourself with how it works and start shooting it.

Next thing you know, every time you look at it, you'll know what pretty is.

Just to let everyone know, I have purchased CMP Garands before, maybe 6 of them.  I always bought the cheapest grade, and my results have varied from "look at the pile of crap I got" to "man it looks like new".  Most of them I never fired, I just put them in storage, and when times got tough I sold them.

So now, I want to buy one with the intent of keeping it for good.  It will mostly be for a shooter to take to the range once in a while.  If it's a bit weathered, that's fine.  I just don't wanna be the loser who buys the cheap one again, and this time ends up with a worn out barrel that can't hit paper at 100 yards.

The HRA's are $750.00, the SA's are $950.00 My new HRA is very accurate, I have shot silhouettes at 300 yards so far, and I am very please with it. I have another Correct HRA and it's a heck of a rifle also.

If you have purchased the rack grades in the past then you know that it really is a crap shoot, they are at the low end of the condition spectrum. The service grades are in much better condition and will render a suitable shooter that will have a reasonable amount of barrel life left in it. Even though they are Mixmaster’s, some of them that I have seen will easily rival the Correct Grade rifles in looks and finish quality.

I recently received one of the HRA Specials and I wish that I had ordered two; they were an incredible value at $ 750.00. With clean well cared for Correct Stocks the CMP could have rated them as Collector Grade rifles and auctioned them.

Good Luck on your choice.

having culled through TONS of M1's at the south store over the last couple of years i can tell you MOST of the SG rifle look better than the correct grade guns.

I looked at the CMP website and could not find the answer to this question...I want to buy a Garand.  I am not a member of the CMP, yet, however, I do understand the requirements to buy a CMP rifle.  Once I assemble the required documents, can I go to a CMP store with the required documents and walk out with a rifle?  All the paperwork I saw on the website was for a mail order...I will do that if I have to, but I'd rather get to pick my own rifle at the store, you know?  BTW, I'll be going to the store in AL.

you can complete the entire sale paperwork and all at the cmp store. YOU MUST bring your cmp club affiliation paperwork with you... ie club card or documentation of affliated organization.
