First let me say, I have absolutely no M14 knowledge. With that said, my sister has asked me to get some M14 magazines for her husband who is a certified gun nut.
So, for Christmas I would like to find him 2-3 magazines. The only thing he told my sister was make sure they are USGI. I tried the EE, but am quickly learning that I don't know enough. I will also be going to the Phoenix SAR show this weekend, but I don't now how to spot USGI magazines yet. Any knowledge that can be passed along would be very appreciated. |

First - USGI are 20 rounders. If they are in dated, foil lined kraft paper gubmint wrap then they are unissued (most likely) USGI. Some are in white cloth-type sealed bags too, usually in pairs.
Unwrapped - look for makers mark on the back edge (narrow side of the mag which faces the shooter) near the bottom and stamped in the sheet metal body of the mag. Can be 3 initials or a symbol, etc and sometimes very light and hard to see because of the parkerizing. I have a VN vet friend that brought home an M14 mag with *no* markings, but this seems to be the exception, not the rule. If you can get unissued USGI for $20-$35 apiece, that's SOP last I knew, but let me say I have not been pricing M14 mags for a year or two so don't quote me on those prices. If you get desperate and strike out at the gun show, I have 2 mags I will part with. PM/email me. |
