My dad purchased a Universal M1 carbine (he's not a gun guy, he didn't know the difference) from somebody he works with. We took it out to the range and first round, tears the lip off the extractor. I ordered replacement parts from nurmich and replaced the extractor (major PITA BTW!) and went out to try again, three rounds later, torn extractor.

Two extractors and I have no idea what the cause is, ammo? We were using S&B.

Thoughts? So far this thing has been a POS and I'm not the type to tell him to unknowingly sell it to someone else.

First what ammo are you using, American brand or Amerc ? Is the brass case getting stuck in the chamber?
I would say it is one of two things or a combination. First take a wire chamber brush and thouroughly clean the chamber with hoppes, wipe clean do not oil. Give it a try, if it still happens I would change ammo brands

Inspect the chamber for a defect that would cause a stuck fired round.

Yeah, what FXNTIME said and go ahead and try some different ammo.  AND, replace your op slide spring.  I suppose a worn one could be helping to beat it.  But the chamber makes more sense.  What brand is it?  Oh universal.   Hmmmmmm.....

Replace Op rod spring and scrub the chamber with a good brass chamber brush. Inspect it for rusty pits also. That will make the brass case stick to the chamber walls and cause the issue at hand. A worn out op rod spring can cause problems also. WarDawg
