First off Happy Halloween everyone.

I am in the process of joining the CMP and ordering my first Garand.  I'm thinking service grade and maybe asking nicely for a springfield.
One of the questions I couldn't find the answer to is...  Will there be cosmoline all over the rifle when I get it?  Or will there be little bits of cosmoline here and there that will need to be cleaned?

Depends.  I've seen CMP rifles pretty well coated in cosmoline, and some dry and clean.  Regardless, you'll want to break it down and clean / lube anyway, so don't worry about it.

i think they have ultrasonic cleaners now

You dont need to nicely ask for a Springfield, you get the maker that you pay for. Metal may or may not need to be cleaned stock may or may not need to be cleaned. It is recommended to do a complete break down , clean and lube rifle before firing. SomeService Grades are being shipped with new Boyds Commercial Stocks

Probably not.  I've got a bunch of them.  Very little cosmolene.  The Greeks seemed to use axle grease a lot of the time.

The CMP will once again have Springfield M1 Specials for sale after 11-03-08.
Springfield receiver, new barrel, reparked metal and or new metal, new stock and sling
For $995.00.    H & R Correct Grade Specials with new wood for $750.00 are available now. The Correct Grade Specials will not last long at that price, since there are only 200 available. Or at least that is what the CMP forum is saying. If you are thinking about a purchase, you might check them out.

Last year I was in line on the opening day of sales for the Special Grade rifles at the North Store.  There was a limit of one.  I tried to buy a couple.  They politely declined my offer.  Hey, I tried..it's not like I was going to re-sell it.

SelfishlyI hoped they would never offer it again, as Orest and others had openly speculated it would be a one time deal.

They have new wood, new Wilson barrels, and are re-parked and packed with a new sling.  Sling and stock are stamped with CMP.  I paid $895 last year for my 194 Springer.  I have seen them being re-sold for as much as $1200, which is about what you'd have into a DGR restoration if you supplied the gun.

If you have the $$$ or can leverage the credit, buy it now.  You will not regret it.

My little brother bought one on the same trip.  Both rifles will shoot golf balls at 100 yards from the bench with HXP.

No cosmo on mine.  Just some gun oil.  I assume that since they test fire the rifle prior to shipping that they must do some type of cleaning.  This is a service grade SA.

There is no one per customer limit on this group M1 specials, Orest said that they will only count on your 12 Garands per year limit. Check this link and scroll down to about post number 8. If you want another one order soon, even though they will have approximately 1000 rifles they can only produce about 50 per month so a backlog will form pretty quickly.

Are the service grade ser. #'s in the ww2 era range?  That is the time period that I love to  study and would prefer a garand that was possibly used in the war.

Both WW11 and Post War. The WW11 will more than likely have a replaced abrrel

You can request one with a WWII era serial number. The CMP staff will try to fill a request for a WW II rifle for a first time purchaser if they can.

CMP will try a fill simple requests for anyone not just first time buyers. Ask nicely for a WW11 era and chances are real good that you will get it. Some of the Service Grades are also being shipped with commercial Boyds stocks. If you want a USGI stock you could also ask for that but you may not get a WW11 rifle and a USGI stock. I would list your requests in the order that are the most important

I've gotten some that were dunked in a vat of cosmolene, others lightly coated with oil, others bone dry.  Its a crap shoot, but always remember, cosmolene is your friend.  Without it, you'd be getting a hunk of rusted metal.
