I own 1 AR 10,000 rounds of 5.56 100 30 rd magazines I was thinking of purchasing a semi-auto in .308(M1,FAL,AR10)......something that I will put a scope on ,and effectively hit targets at 800or so yards out. My question is......Knowing that this could be your last purchase for a semi-auto rifle, would you purchase a second AR because of the investment that you already have, or do you think it would be worth investing in a semi-auto in .308 to have the advantages of having .308 as a second calibur. |

If you don't have a scope on the AR, put one on. If you think that you really don't need one, then email me and I will tell you why you do. If you don't have 20 round AR15 mags, get them. It is a lot easier to shoot with them in the prone position. I will skip comments on training skills and physical conditioning because you are only speaking to equipment. Rifle = $X (don't forget sales tax and registration fees, those are real dollars too) scope, rings, mount =$X unless you delude yourself and believe that a Walmart special is the foundation upon which you would base your life shtf ammo= $x magazines, parts, cleaning kit, carrying case with lock, sling and rangefinder (unless you can range to within 25 yards at 800 yards) =$X gunsmithing=$? training =$X training and practice ammo =$X You are going to have a whole bunch of lemmings buy stripped AR15 lowers. They pipe dream that they will find reasonably priced ammo and magazines someday. They also delude themselves into thinking that there is a supply of cheap buildout kits on the market. If what you own is a safe queen, nothing will help you. If you are the normal dude who commutes and has a rifle at home and one in the car, you are up the food chain. The AR is not the best system in the world. However, if you haven't already addressed the issues raised in my posting, then you should go in that direction. |

just wondering,
do you really think you need to shoot 800 yards????? hunting in MN, the LONGEST shot ive ever taken was 285 yards, lucky one shot kill. i feel that someone 800 yards away is not *much* of a threat to me, and if they were, id hide behind something |

Personally I would rather deal with it there than in my face . |

Alot matters on what the complete purpose of the rifle is for you, what else you have and who else is going to be with you if the shit hits the fan to use also.
An M14/M1A is a great rifle system and my favorite and I particularly don't like the AR much, but if you've only got one other modern magazine fed semi around and a wife or someone else with you, than they should be armed too when things go bad and it's better to have some commonality in rounds, magazines, functionality and parts. If it's just you and the rifle will be for just your use and future needs than buy the M14/M1A it's a great choice, but if not, buy the second AR and have that commonality. You can always add on an SPR AR even though it's no M14, scope it and buy some higher grain, hollow point ammo for longer range hitting power. In reality too, unless your a trained and skilled long distance shot, taking an 800 yard shot is alot of chance to miss, it will alert people better to your exact location also and waste ammo. For hunting it's very unrealistic to have good one shot drop hits in the vitals at that range unless your damn good, unlike just getting a good center mass shot on a human target in a fight. I love my M1A's and yes there capable of hitting hard out farther, but I know I'm not likely to take many shots out past 500 yards for offense/defense and no more than 200 for hunting. The only shot I'd look to take past 500 in the offense/defense aspect is on vehicles, looking to stop them in there place and slow my enemies advance. |
