I got a new SA M1A standard in a trade. It is NIB, unfired, and had all the paper work with it. The MFG date was november 03 and has a headspace of 1.632. This is not my first M1a rifle. The last one was Fed Ord and I got rid of it because of the chinese parts.
Now I am proud to have a US made rifle. I have not got to shoot it yet but a few things catch my eye.
The flash hider doesnt have a bayonet lug. That will be replaced 1rst thing. I havent spent ours getting a razor edge on my bayonet for nothing. You can shave with it. A good thing though is the flash hider has a NM .062 sight.
No other parts are NM.
The trigger may need some work. It has alot of creep before the release. That I will know more about once trigger time comes around.

The rear of the reciver does not touch the wood at all. THere is a very large gap inbetween. Is this common? The stock has a proof mark and selector cut, which I want filled in. Will bedding the stock take care of that (the gap, and selector that is)?

The rear of the reciver does not touch the wood at all. THere is a very large gap inbetween. Is this common? I believe that the heel of the reciever should touch the stock but if it shoots well, I wouldn't worry about it.The stock has a proof mark and selector cut, which I want filled in. Will bedding the stock take care of that (the gap, and selector that is)?not unless the person who beds it also fills it in for you.  Some people will fill it in but I have a USGI stock on my M1a that I use hunting and have never had a problem with the selector cutouts.

I had the same problem.  I sent my rifle back in and they said it was a problem with the trigger group locking up.  Hold the rifle in your hand with the barrel facing upward.  Press your thumb against the heel of the reciever.  If the reciever moves a little bit, you've got the same problem I did.  After SAI sent me my rifle back, there was no movment, and no gap.

I am sending it back just to make sure.

No matter how much money i throw at a M1A, there is still problems with them.

FWIW: Chinese barrels, op rods and trigger groups are equal to USGI barrels, op rods and trigger groups.

Good luck with you new M1A.
