I know the name of this forum is M1/M1A but I figured yous guys would be able to lend some help.  I bought an Underwood M1 a few months back, went out to the range a few days after I got it and shot some ammo through the one mag that I had. Had a lot of FTF's Most of the time the bolt would stop about 1/4-1/2" out of battery, I tried cleaning it and oiling the piss out of it and this didn't help. I bought 3 new mags, none of which, from what i could tell were USGI's and the same problems occurred with all mags.
I used fed American Eagle and some reloads the second go around.
Oh and it is the round bolt type not the flat one.
What is my problem?
4 bad mags cause they aren't USGI?
Weak springs in a 50+ year old gun?
Ammo?

I would suggest a new recoil spring.  I am not sure I would get one of the Hi Speed Extra Strength ones, as I have heard "Yae" and "Nae" on them.
I would also get the headspace checked.

What kind of mags?

If you were using 30 round mags that might explain it.  There is a modification needed to make them use them.  The M1 carbine was issued with 15 round mags and these should work fine even with old springs.  Not saying you shouldn't probably check those too.

1)  Always USGI mags
2)  30 round mag requires different mag catch

Try 15 round mags and US surplus ammo.

Nice looking carbine there.

I would try the op slide spring first.

I can't get mine to run super great either.  After replacing just about everything I can think of.

Questions cause I dont know much about M1's

How would headspace affect this if it does go into battery and is not under spec?

Is this the right mag catch for the 30Rders, I am pretty sure it is the correct one and I have been told that it is, the 30 rders hold in place just fine.

If the headspace is short or the chamber a bit tight, you could have the same type of feeding problem you are having.  I did, and it went away with a new spring.  Check with  Numrich(Gunpartscorp.com), they will probably have just about everything you need for a carbine.
The M2 mag catch has an added piece on the side.  The longer 30 rd mag hace a 3rd spot stamped into the side for added support.  Whereas the 15 rd mags only used the two on the back.

I would replace spring and check to see if the gas piston moves freely. If not see if the piston nut has been stacked if so leave it alone . Take break cleaner and spry the psiton liberaly. Let it soak in until it moves freely. Do not oil it. If it is not staked in place you can remove the nut and piston and clean the area. You should use the proper wrench to do so. When tightening the nut back on do not overtighten or you may crack the housing and ruin the barrel
