I'm looking at getting a service grade carbine from the CMP.  It says on the site that they are accepting orders on the 28th of April.  Does that mean that I should mail in my order so it gets there on the 28th or I should send in the order ASAP and I'll be added to a list of some sort?  Sorry for the noob question, I've never ordered anything from the CMP before.

If you want a specific manufacturer and it says accepting orders on a certain date if your order gets to the CMP before that date they will send it back to you.

Unfortunately, for the specific manufacturers, there's so much demand that if you're not there on the first day, you're pretty much out of luck.  They've got pictures on their site of the boxes of orders that come on on the 1st day of a carbine sale.  I picked up an Inland and was too late to get a Rock-Ola, so I ended up getting a Winchester instead.  Both look to be in great shape mechanically.  The wood is a little beat up, but that's to be expected.  Both were rack grade.  A great deal for the price.

So I guess the best thing to do would be to overnight your order so it gets there on the day that they're available and hope for the best?  Thanks for your help.

Or you can do what a lot of asshats do and put a order in now for something that is 6 months out from being filled like a collector/correct grade Garand. Then on the 28th of April, you call the CMP and have that order canceled and request the Carbine you want.

It has to arrive no sooner. It's probably worth it to use a carrier like FedEx that will guarantee delivery date (though I've mailed all of my orders).

Hootbro, Dont know where you get you info but CMP will not do that. If you have your order in for a Service Grade Garand and it has not gone to processing yet they would let you change it to another grade of Garand but they will not put you in line in front of someone else for a carbine

send it that day and pay for same day arrival or send it the day before and pay for next day arrival.  Thats what I did

A lot of the people who angled for the "Trifecta" (Rockola, Quality Hardware, and Winchester) and received their order did the following:  send your order via Fedex to arrive on Saturday the 26th.  It won't be opened, but it will get in the pile early for processing on Monday the 28th.  It's a gray area that's been discussed at length  in the CMP forum, and Orest stated that orders received on Saturday will not be sent back.  I personally think it's ethically challenged; but it's a free country.
I only ordered a Quality Hardware (SG) back in January and a (RG) Inland and mananged to get them both.  I figured all the excitement would be over the Rockolas and Winchesters.  Good luck.  I'd like more carbines but my boss, I mean the wife said no more.

So if the order does not arrive on the DAY of them accepting orders you wont get one?  Wow, I was hoping to just send in my order the week they start accepting such and calling it good. :(

If your order arrives too soon; it will be sent back.  There's always a feeding frenzy and CMP is overwhelmed with boxes of mail on the first day of sales for a particular carbine.   Sending via USPS is luck of the draw.  Your best bet is to send it overnight mail either USPS or FedEx to arrive the first day of sales (on Monday) or the Saturday before.  That was my plan for my next carbine purchase until the wife cancelled that idea.  Good luck.

I know what you mean about the boss...I'm still trying to figure out how I can get one of these ordered without the boss questioning what the purpose would be.  I've already tried telling her I was getting it for her...that doesn't work.

I am wanting to get one of these April 28th carbines as well. Seems like the FedEx idea is the best one so far.

It depends. In the case of the Inlands and Underwoods, orders were filled that came in long after the initial opening. In fact, they announced the Inlands and Underwoods were sold out and then later started accepting orders again. (I got a service grade Inland on the second round).

The problem is that some of these brands (Rockola, IBM) are in pretty short supply. They only have a few thousand of those guns. The demand far exceeds supply. It seems like the Internet has really made the CMP situation much more chaotic. All the people talking about them on the various forums creates a feeding frenzy. I think even the CMP is surprised about the level of interest.

It's clearly a mass hysteria thing. The evidence of that comes in the the latest Garand offerings. Two years ago, the word was out that the CMP was down to its last Garands and there would be no more to be had . . . ever! We saw the same kind of buying frenzy then. People went absolutely ape shit buying the last of the Garands. Now there's a bunch more in stock and there doesn't seem to be an inordinate amount of interest in them. All grades are available.

Of course, who knows if the CMP will ever have more carbines. And even if the rumors of Greek carbines are true, those will likely be mostly common brands. If you want one of the upcoming offerings you might want to buy now (or April 28, to be precise).

Personally, I don't share the drive to get all the different brands. I like the adjustable sights, which block the brand engraving. I can't see having a rack of each different brand if I won't even be able to see what brand it is without removing the sight. (Yeah, I know the barrel is stamped, but there's no guarantee you won''t get a mixmaster).

CMP still has plenty of Inland , Undewood , Winchester,Quality Hardware Rack Grade carbines in stock ready to ship. The Rack grades have been pretty nice and a great value for the price. Cant beat $419.00 for a Inland! The wood is pretty rough and may need some work but thats half the fun of it.

So the rack grade would be alright as a simple shooter?  The reason I'm really looking at carbines is, my cousin has one that I've shot a number of times and I've found it to be very enjoyable to shoot. I'm not really looking for a collector, just something to shoot for years to come...would a rack grade fit the bill?  I don't mind doing a little work on it as that is half the fun.

For the price difference, I think service grade is the way to go if both are available. But, based on what I've seen posted on the CMP forum, I'd say you'd be pleased with a rack grade.

Wrong.  Per customer service and Orest at CMP, receiving the order two days in advance of the sale date is OK.  My order for a service grade Rock-Ola was received on the saturday before the monday on sale date without problems.  I proudly received a 1943 Rock-Ola with a ME of 2, Rock barrel and Rock bolt all true to the receiver without issues about a month later.  Call customer service if you don't believe me.

But that's only because CMP isn't open on Saturdays. Orest said in his forum that he went in on Saturday to meet the delivery drivers because he knew there would be orders coming in. Your order got thrown in the Monday pile. I realize that CMP made an exception in this case but I don't believe they have an official "two days early is OK" policy.

When I called customer service, they told me as long as they didn't get it before Wednesday January 2nd it would be OK and would not be returned to sender.  I pulled my old shipping receipt and my order actually made it there on friday, not saturday.  It is what it is and all I can say is call customer service and ask how far in advance the order can be in  before April 28th.

Wow. I'm surprised they told you that. I bet they wouldn't want that to be public knowledge. I promise I won't tell anyone . . .

This was already discussed by myself with others on the CMP site which led to some drama.

Mailed my order today via USPS. It cost $16.25, but it will be there on Monday, and not before.

Should have saved the $16.00 and sent it out on Thursday. It would have arrived on Saturdaywhich is fine as they aren't open anyway. Everyones orders that arrive on Saturday and Monday will be all mixed in together so you will get no advantage only $16.00 poorer

That's all a function of where you live, variability in postal efficiency, etc. This is probably my only chance to get what I want at a reasonable price, so why take the risk? USPS cannot guarantee delivery on a certain date for first class mail.

I did save $11. FedEx wanted $27.
