I bought ammo a month ago Now I have to get a sling... how much cosmo do I need to clean before shooting it? Obviously the barrel and action, but do I need to go into every nook-and-cranny, the stock, etc.? I WANNA SHOOT IT
|
You need to do a good job of cleaning all the cosmo off all the metal, especially the bolt [AND FP], piston and related assys , trigger pack, and chamber/BBL. you can spend time later getting it out of the stock. Clean it well, lube it with grease well where required and have fun. |
OK; I've seen all the instructions for cleaning off cosmo. Can I use the dishwasher method for the metal? (And does it need to be detail stripped or just field stripped?)What is your recommended grease, and where can I buy it? (i.e. would a local fun store carry it or do I have to wait for a fun show/mail order it?) Edit: I now have Mosin-, Kalashnikov-, Garand-, and Stoner-designed rifles. |
I personally break the weapon down and use carb cleaner on the metal bits outdoors. The cheapass stuff at the local carmart works perfectly well. I hose all the bits down, letthem sit, them wipe them down and do it all over letting the cleaner do it's work. When I have it all removed, I hose it down with Brake cleaner, rinsing it well, then oil the metal lightly [ALL oil will be removed] grease the parts that need to be greased, and assemble back into the stock. I usually let things like the bolt [especially if you don't have the tool] actually soak in carb cleaner in a metal or plastic can with a lid and slosh it around. [make sure plastic can is OK with carb cleaner, I use old coffee cans] After sloshing for a while, I brush it down well, hit it with brakecleaner, reinspect for cosmo, resoak as needed til everything is perfectly free to move. I them CLP the bolt wipe down and grease the rail cuts.before installation. I personally don't use the dishwasher, partially because I don't own one [well save for the wife anyways] and because I don't like the fact that water WILL get into places you don't want it. |
You remembered to buy ammo, but forgot to pick up a $20 green cotton web sling? FAIL. ![]() It wouldn't hurt to break it down completely and give it a good cleaning, but just a field strip should be fine if you want to get out there and shoot. That's all I did with mine initially. I'd also recommend getting a couple of replacement springs just in case you need them - get an op-rod spring and a clip latch spring. I wound up replacing both on mine. -Mark |
I have my old cotton ChiCom SKS sling... will that work? I'll start getting my bulk order from Brownell's together... |
I'd just wait and get a USGI surplus cotton green web sling. They're everywhere and generally very inexpensive. ORION7 has some in stock for $10, though you'll need to remove a little surface rust from the metal parts. Conveniently, it's also the sling your rifle would have been issued with. -Mark |
| That Chicom sling will make that Garand PUKE! JK- the advice on breaking it down and cleaning off the cosmoline is sound, plus it will teach you a lot of essential skills. When I got my first Garand, I asked my friend who was a Garand guru to show me how to field strip it and re-assemble it. he stripped it in about 10 seconds , put the small parts in a bag and handed it to me and said "Have fun!" Of course, I did- that is half the fun. That's a nice rifle, by the way. Have a blast! |
