Found a Poly M1a at the show this weekend. It has a USGI synthetic stock on it and someone had replaced the rear sight with US components, otherwise stock. Appeared to have a low round count. Guy's firm price was $750.

Great price, did you grab it ??

No, I did not....but I know where it is! Is that really a great price or just a "good" one?

Bone stock Poly 14s are easily worth $1K

Well, ok then. Looks like I have a phone call to make. Think I'll probably turn it into a bush rifle- have someone whack the barrel off at 18".....

You could cut down the barrel, but I think you will be much happier if you have an M14 rifle
Smith replace the barrel with an 18.0" and perform a USGI bolt conversion at the same time.

Do you say that because of the chrome lining and it's tendency to flake once cut? If so I would keep it as is and maybe cut one of my unlined, newer, Springfields on second thought.

I would probably send it to Warbird for the work. $200 for the bolt conversion and refinish of the receiver, plus my new bolt.....I can get it done for under a grand. Thankfully I bought a bunch of bolts when CMP had them for $35 apiece....

No you didn't.

And, you are crazy to not have gotten the Polytech M14S for that price, even if it was as it came from the factory.

No, leave the barrel alone.  It is chrome lined and cutting them off can be tricky with any chrome lined barrel.

Besides, the M14 was designed with that length barrel, so leave it alone.

If you get it, check the headspace.  If it is okay, just shoot the damned thing and stop worrying about dumping money into it.

Why does the reciever need to be refinished?

This is my bone stock Poly.  The only things I have done to it is to make it 922 compliant (so I can put a flash suppressor/bayo lug on it).  Those were the GI fiberglass stock (which yours already has), a US made handguard, use US made mags, and then put the FS/Bayo lug on it.

It headspaces fine and shoots great:

They aren't easily worth $1000 with no accessories. They sell regularly on Gunbroker for $800.

$800 is a great price, but they are in fact easily worth $1K

Yes, they do sell for that, but, given it's features vs some newer rifles and their prices, I would say they could easily be worth $1k, but I am glad that people do sell them for $700 (which I paid for mine about 1.5 years ago) to $800.

I have said it before, bang for the buck in an M14 type rifle, you can beat a Poly or Norinco.

Put it this way, I would not let any of my virgin ChiCom M14s go for less than $1K ...
The non-virgin SEI enhanced examples would bring much, much more $$$

I would buy them all day long at that price and laugh all the way to the bank.

Yeah... again, there are regularly sub $800 M14S rifles sold on Gunbroker. There is currently more than one listed in that price range, and at least one of those has a buy-now price of $800 and hasn't sold in 7 days. So $800 for a stock M14S is not something to jump all over yourself about, and apparently no one is buying them up all day long at that price and laughing all the way to the bank.

The $750 with USGI stock and sights is a good deal, but not too much below average.

Yeah, so buy one or both of them already

GB is a decent place to get an idea of what an item will sell for, but I
prefer to see the item in person and compare prices on the local level.

Where did you get the FH with bayo lug for your Poly?  Did you get a metric threaded FH?

I can't remember, but I think I got it from Numrich.  I re-used the original castle nut because the one that came with the FS/bayo lug was metric.  Some people say you can make it work, but I saw no reason not to use the same castle nut that was on the rifle.

The FS/bayo lug itself is not threaded.

Bought my Norinco at a gun show in 93 for $300. Put on a usgi stock, and flashider, and handguard's. Haven't had to change or lap the bolt yet. Had no idea back than that it would be worth almost a grand today. Many times I thought about trading or selling it. Talk about steppin in shit I could never part with it now!

I get 2" grouping at 125 yds. Crome lined breach and bore. Haven't been able to shoot it any further than that distance yet though. All my club has ever had is 125 yds.
