Does anyone know what the gas cylinder lock on the Garand is made of? I've been reblueing some parts on my rifle and this was the only part that wouldn't take blueing. Not a big deal really, but made me curious. Any explanations for this? Thanks |

The lock, lock screw and the cylinder are a stainless alloy... ETA---This is what I use to "blue" M1/M14 gas systems. www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1103&title=OXYNATE~%20NO.%2084%20-%20HOT%20CHEMICAL%20BLUING%20COMPOUND |

That would make sense why the lock wouldn't blue. However, my lock screw must have been made of something else because that took the blueing quite well. Thanks for the link... do they sell it in smaller amounts? I don't think I need 40 gallons for one part. Thanks for the quick response. |
Try using Alumahyde II from Browenlls. It's an epoxy paint that works well on stainless or carbon steel. www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1117&title=ALUMA-HYDE~%20II It works especially well when you are using putting new parts on an older military style rifle and can't afford to have it refinished. |
