I purchased an ammo can that contained 240 rds on what appears to be 8 round Garand stripper clips. They still have the cardboard cover over the rounds as well. The bullets are black tip. The can has the marking "M2 ball", "280 rds", "AP", and I think "caliber 30". The can is outside and I'm not suitably dressed to retrieve it. I have done some looking on the net and believe it to be 30-06 Garand(?) ammo. Can anyone substantiate that? If it isn't, would anyone venture a guess as to what it is? I believe the headstamp was 50 something as well. The ammo was purchased at a sale from a gas station that closed in the late 50's or early 60's and the owner had a reputation for bartering for gas. Could have possibly been traded by a soldier from Ft. Knox.? Anyway, any input would be appreciated as well as any idea on value. I haven't decided if I'm selling, or trading the ammo or buying an M1. |

Look at the headstamp. Hopefully your "50-something" is 52 or higher...year of manufacture. There should also be two letters, like S L, designating the plant that produced it. In the case of S L, it would be Saint Louis. By knowing what year and where it was manufactured, you can determine whether or not it is corrosive. Those prices posted are what ammunitiontogo.com is charging for reloads assembled out of de-mil'd (pulled) projos. If you've got the real deal and it's in good / non-corroded condition, you may be able to command a higher price. M2 AP is often considered more acccurate than standard M2 FMJ Ball. My Greek HXP M2 shoots to the identical point of impact as my SL53 M2 AP out to 200 yards. I haven't shot them further than that. I'm sitting on a metric shitload of it myself. |
| I checked the ammo today. It is Lake City, '53 headstamp. It all appears to be in excellent condition. Even the paint on the tips is fairly unscuffed. It is all on clips with the cardboard covering the majority of the cartridge. I think I'm going to the next funshow and see what it will bring. |
