I recently received a new M1 stock set from the CMP and the inletting for thr trigger group is too deep - it sinks well below the surface of the wood by about 3/32".

It's amazing to me how this can happen.

Anyone else have this problem? It's a really nicely figured piece of wood...

Never heard of such a thing...but it was made by a man.

I'd just bed it.

First, check how tight is the lockup between the receiver and the trigger group. There should be some tension for the last half inch of travel before the trigger guard locks in place. There should be no up and down play between the rear of the receiver and the stock when locked in. If it passes those two tests, then you have to file and sand the stock by the trigger to allow better access to the trigger. I had a beautiful aftermarket M-1 stock once that had this problem. Everything went together perfectly except for the trigger group being set too deep into the stock. After the file and sanding, all was well.

You mean the trigger group locks up sloppy or that the wood simply stands proud over the metal?  If it's the first case, send it back.  If it's the second case, well, it's a Boyd's stock--get out a file and some sandpaper if you don't like it.

The bottom plate of the trigger housing assembly directly above the trigger is recessed deeply into the stock. Additionally, there is considerable front to rear movement of the assembly in the stock. In the original stock, the trigger assembly sits flush with the underside of the stock, as it should.

I've been in contact with the CMP and they are sending a return label out pronto...

Well, although I asked for a refund, the folks at the CMP decided to give me a replacement stock. I thinks that this one was put aside from the others as the inside of it was quite dusty.

Check it out below:

I have no complaints...

Duh!!!!!

The hardest part will be finding nice enough front handguards to go with that stock. That is GOOD wood.

The handguards  that came with the stock are just fine. I will have to do some fitting as the trigger guard will not close (too tight).

Fitting an M1 stock is new to me so any suggestions would be appreciated...
