I bought a Socom 16 for a hog gun (works great by the way).  Does anybody have reliable information about what my 16" bbl is doing to my 308's velocity?  Also, any opinions on how the decrease would affect the round's effectiveness at 200+ yds?

I don't have exact velocities but at 200yds you should be fine.  Even with an 8" barrel a HK-51 still pushes .308 rounds out at near 7.62x39 velocities.

I know its not 16" stats but my 18" scout pushes SA surplus ball right at 2600 fps.
7.62 fmj delivers its energy the old fashion way, with weight and speed not fragmentation. A 10" .308 is still a .308 Even a 16" .308 SOCOM trumps a 20" 5.56.

I don't know if it's quite that simple.  Some position give away more than others.  Maybe it averages to that though.
