a friend of mine had showed intersest in trading one of his Garands for my Springfield XD 9mm.  I've always wanted a Garand, but i dont know anything about them.
he has 5 in his collection, all of which are original, unrestored, and like new!
2 i had a chance to look over briefly- the one, i think was a springfield, the other was a winchester--i think

i sure i'm the one coming out on top on this deal, the XD was only $450,  and these Garands are pristine, no matter which one i choose.

this guy is my life long best friend of 35 years, and i only want to be as fair as possible, since he inherited this collection from his father.

what do ya think?

sounds like a deal that he needs some lube on. I just traded my HRA garand for a springfield m1a loaded model. I left with a smile on my face.

Take the Winchester.

Without pics it's hard to say, but if the M1 is as cherry as you say you should trade him at least 3 of your pistols, maybe more, for it to be a fair trade.

Sell your friend the pistol, then take the proceeds and go find another Garand.

Your friend's Garand collection came from his father, and are heirlooms. He should keep the rifles, passing them onto his offspring. Firearms with history and family ties should remain in the family.

Simply my .02

( Personally - I would never even consider selling the firearms I long ago acquired from my grandfather. )

we already talked about that, and that is not an issue
these were purchased back in the late 80's, and have no real family history.
btw,  both of our families have a long time marine corp history, and i feel honered that he even asked me to do this trade.

To be fair I would give him $400 with the XD for the Winchester if they are in as good shape as you are saying.

he said he would be happy with the gun and 1000rds of ammo, i still think i'm way on top here, and i know he does too--i've known this guy my whole life, and he's like a brother to me, he's not too concerned about the difference, and i would never get rid it for any reason.

i am very fortunate to have a friend like this my whole life

The winchester in pristine shape is worth 1500 to 2000 bucks.  A nice Springfield is worth 600-1200 depending on condition, original parts etc.  Those number are my ballparks and nothing more official than that.

He's your friend, treat him right.

You should give him some lube because your basically raping the guy if you trade.

i wouldnt call it rape, he's aware of what he has, and he proposed the trade.
like i said, he's my best friend of over 35+ years, and yep, it's one hell of a deal, and he's one hell of a friend

I would say that is what friendship is all about. It is not about who has the "one up", but about sharing. As long as both of you are satisifed and happy with the exchange, that is great. I wish I had friends like that. Hell, I wish I had one friend like that. For that matter, I wish I had one real friend (besides my wife). For you guys that have all of your buddies and long-time friends, I am envious. I am too much of a loner. I do enjoy the company of my co-workers outside of work, but that is not the same as having real friends. Very few people I know have the same interests. All of you guys on the forums are my main source of comraderie. Thanks for that. ChunkyLover53, enjoy your Garand as much as you have enjoyed your friendship.
