I was recently at an estate sale and I saw an odd looking M14.  The receiver said US Rifle, Winchester M14, 7.62mm.

The rifle didn't have the original stock or barrel, it had what essentially looked like a stock and barrel from a remington 7400.

The look was similar  to this:

Does anyone know anything about Winchester M14 stamped rifles/receivers.

Winchester M14s were a magazine fed select fire rifle in 7.62x51.  Pre dated the AR15/M16. Was a US govt mil weapon but it certainly did not look like the above pictured. The ONLY thing I can think of is that someone somehow gunsmithed one into something else and truthfully, that ain't the rifle I would choose to do that with, much easier guns to modify. Once A MG always a MG also, so even if somehow bastardized, unless it was on paper legally it would be a felony.

I'd have loved to see a pic to see exactly what ya saw.

The rifle I saw wasn't like any M14/M1A I have seen before.  They described it as being upgraded and "sporterized".  Personally I thought it looked ugly as hell and was a dumb change to a M14.

The picture above is of a remington 7400, I just added it to demonstate the barrel and stock style that was on the receiver.

I would have liked to have taken a picture as well but I didn't want them to think I was snooping around their collection or up to some shenanigans.

Is there anyway to absolutely confirm it is a MG?  Serial # range?  Design?

If papers existed, what would be the worth?

If it was a GI Winnie, you could look up the SN# range and it would verify if it were truly a Winnie M14. I can't see A M14 being "sportsterized", possibly MAYBE could it have been some sportsterized M1 Garand converted to 308 and stamped as such? Still, with the way both rifle lock up in the stock someone would have had to do a lot of work to get one to look somewhat like the above.

Ya got me stumped.........

Where can I find the serial # range?

Call the ATF @ (304)616-4500 and ask to verify the SN - they are actually SUPER friendly

A shitload - probably more then 15,000, maybe closer to 20

If yo have the SN#, go over to the M14 site and ask, One of the gurus [one posts here occasionally] will tell you. The books I have don't really go into that kind of details, most of my stuff is old GI publications, Camp Perry stuff and the like.

If it's papered legally and can be put back to stock, it would be worth pretty darn good money, if not, I can't tell you......

Is there a way to see if it is a reweld without removing the stock?  I don't think the widow would allow me to take it apart.

pull the bolt back and look at the receiver rails where the lug on the bolt rides,
be sure to look on both sides of the receiver,

does it have a selector switch, or a selector lock? the lock will look like a 1/2" button sticking out from the right side of the receiver just below the rear sight,
