I am considering buying a Sprinfield Armory Gas Cylinder from Brownells as a spare, but wanted to know what is different when compared to a USGI cylinder, and how close the color of the finish is to the USGI finish.

The bigger issue is the diameter!  I had a usgi on mine but I sent the rifle back for a replacement barrel.  It came back with a SAInc gas cylinder.  I didn't notice for a long time (when I tried to put my GC wrench on it and found out it didn't fit)

The SAInc are larger (I beleive because they are cast not forged).  Sadlak makes a wrench to fit "commercial" gas cylinders.

I was initially disappointed in losing my GI gas cylinder but in the end the one I got works fine and the gun is more accurate that it ever was.

So, from what you are saying they both appear to be the same; the Sprinfield is a little larger in OD. I can live with that, for the cost. With a discount I can get the cylinder for roughly $40 at Brownells. I am not too concerned with it being cast, most modern cast parts seem to hold up very well.

I don't think you'll see a difference in use at all.

IMHO $40 beats paying $130 for a GI with unknown amount of wear on Ebay.

That is exactly my way of thinking. Thank you for your input.
