I haven't decided exactly what I want yet, but as of today there's nothing immediately available from CMP.  Where are the best places to buy a Garand?

UPDATE:  I overlooked the Rack Grade Springfields from Greece for $395 ($295 Danes less wood).  I may go that route.  I read the best thing to do is buy rack grade and then rebarrel/upgrade as needed.

What in the world are you talking about?

Springfield Armory will rebarrel for $209 and repark for $75.

USGI stocks can be as little as $12, but you will probably want to spend more.  Handguards are relatively pricey.  You can get a synthetic stock with handguards for like $60+.  A new walnut stock with handguards from the CMP is like $120.  The metal for the stocks is like $50 to $75.

A woodless dane in a new CMP stock reparked and rebarreled would run about $800-.  You might luck out and not need to repark or rebarrel, saving almost $300.

Another options would be buying a kit from garandguy.com for $450 and a barreled receiver from the CMP for $300.  Unfortunatley, there do not appear to be any cheaper good quality kits available right now.  If the $200 kits were still around, that would be the way to go.  At this point, you are probably better off getting the Dane and fixing her up.

There are a few places that sell rebuilt Garands for $750-$1,300+.

If you want to spend $900, the CMP has some correct grade rifles available periodically.  They do not appear on the website.  Call and have them pull one for you.

Thanks brasidas.  I'm going to order a Dane less wood and see what I get.  I've heard and read recommendations to go rack grade, anyway.  That way you save some money and mightend up with a barrel that still shoots acceptably well.  If not, you can always have it rebarreled.  I've heard and read good things about the Danish Garands, too.

I don't see how I can go wrong for $317.95 shipped.  Add $126.95 for a CMP Walnut stock set (shipped) and $35 (www.dougsstockpile.com) to $130 (new or like new USGI parts from Fulton Armory) for the metal (shipped), I'll be looking at $480 to $585.  Depending on how it shoots/looks I'll have it rebarreled and/or reparked for a total of $765 to $860 plus the cost of shipping to/from SA for the rebarrel and repark.  Not bad.

You can also put a post-it note on your CMP order, requesting a barrel with low muzzle wear.  I don't know if they will honor that, but it is probably worth a shot.

What are you talking about?  First you say there is nothing available (there is) then talk about ordering from them.  Huh?

BTW, you could call the South store and ask them to set aside a Danish Field Grade (yeah, it's not on the website) and send them the paperwork.

The explanation is right in the text you quoted, Larry.  I overlooked the two NLUs that show up on the website.  Most of the rifles on the web page say "Sold out not accepting orders. 2-16-07".  I'll update the title to avoid further confusion.

I'll try calling the stores to see what else isn't on the website.  Thanks for the tip.

What about calling them and having someone pick you a Danish Field Grade?  256-835-8455.  The store is ext 1138.

Some of the Danish returns, both Rack (woodless) and Field Grades have VAR barrels which are some damn good barrels.

BTW, the woodless are Danes, not Greek.

Calling the South Store to have them hold one won't work. Tried that 2 weeks ago. But you can do like I did and have someone pick one out for you while they are at the south store. Then send in the paperwork.
*Many thanks to LarryG for doing that for me, Sent my paperwork in 2/23 still havn't heard if they've received it or anything so i shot and email to customer service yesterday*

Thanks Larry.  I remember reading that somewhere.  Maybe I'll get lucky.
