I'm thinking about getting a socom-16 rifle, (once I get over the price-tag shock), I was hoping to get some info on them. will they give me any problems?

Is there anyone out there with some pic's of the socom-16 using a wood-stock?(I love gun porn!)...

thanks!

current setup

just before it with rail removed, i currently have the rail on again. looks better

with a woody ( picture didnt turn out so great )

i prefer the fiberglass stocks way better, seem slimmer in the front, more durable, feel lighter.  just a preference.  i think the short barrel throws off the proportionate look with a wood stock where as the full size and scouts look fine. with the 16" barrel it looks too short and stubby ( imo )

the only problem with my socom is the bolt / oprod wont seperate. sounds like i need another 300-500 rounds through it, everything is so tight, needs to loosen up some.  i read SOOO many pages on all the gun forums before i bought mine, seems like the "socom is a piece of shit"  is kind of a rumor. every gun design has flaws, but this one just has a bad rap.

Do ya remember where you heard/read  they are "POS"?  I would hate to drop that much cash and get stuck with POS rifle. so, its very tight new and you have to shoot it alot to "brake it in", is that normal?
I don't think yours look to stuby at all with in the wood stock.

i havent had any problems. its just an internet rumor.  somebody's cousins brothers wife bought his little brother one and his uncle was shooting it and it rusted shut while the bolt fell out and the gun started shooting backwards. one of those deals.

i have not had any problems, i bought mine slightly used ( 250 rounds ) for $1300 with extra stuff.

im not saying socoms are flawless, but i feel there is nothing to worry about. if its a POS then just sell it.

I have a SOCOM II ( VLTOR "cheese grater" rails removed! ) with better than a thousand rounds sent downrange and have not experienced any difficulties with the rifle.

It sound's like its not realy "finicky" on ammo. that's another good reason to buy one.

If I could pick your brain's a little bit more.......This might be a bad question, but will Springfield sell the piston and front sight assembly for the socom rifle?   so , if I had a M1A I could change out the sight and the barrel to make a 16" rifle? if not, do ya guys know anyone who will?

thanks

It's my understanding that SA doesn't sell individual rile parts.

As regards modifying a standard 22" M1A barrel and gas assembly to 16" - there are some custom gunsmiths specializing in M1A work that more than likely can accommodate your needs. You might venture across the street to the M14 forums and see what the resident experts have to say.

My son has a SOCOM (non-rail) and it's a hoot. Recoil is very managable, and it eats everything he feeds it. It has an Aimpoint and is very handy. He and I both prefer it to his fullsize M1A. He lives in Phoenix and goes out to the desert to shoot. The SOCOM is very accurate at longer ranges as well.

I tried putting my Aimpoint ML2 Comp on mine. Without a cheek rest I can only get a "chin" weld. I prefer a solid cheek weld when using a .308 rifle. I eventually took it off and shoot with open sights now.
