Planning a trip with a couple guys to the north store. I was under the impression that as long as you meet the requirements you could walk in and pick out the one you want and your good to go. One of the guys posted this:
"If I pick up my rifle personally at Anniston can I pick out the one I want?

No, the serial number of the rifle you will receive has already been assigned to you and we will not change it."

Is that the same procedure at the north store? Or are we rading something wrong?

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks

Yes, if you bring all your credentials with you and pass the background check, you will be able to bring home your rifle that day.

When you go to the North Store, you'll enter the cage and be greeted by racks of rifles. They will have gauges for you to borrow, and when you find the rifle you want (or if you need help, ask - they are very friendly and willing to offer assistance to newbies) bring it up to the counter. Fill out your paperwork and they'll call you up to the cashier once your information has been processed. Pay and bring your sales slip back to the cage and they'll check out your Garand - after that, you're on your way!

Excellent, thank you!

Any idea as to what I quoted in my first post has to do with? Is that if say you order it by mail and decide to pick it up?

Yes, if you order by mail, you will be assigned a Garand, you won't be able to choose it yourself.  If you are a repeat customer and walk in, then you can chose it yourself and buy.

Can I get some opinions on rack grade Garands? I asked on another site and was told I would be buying a "parts gun". Any truth in that? I'm looking for a rifle to shoot, not a safe queen.

If you go to the North Store, I can almost guarentee that you will not walk away with a "parts gun" - and you will surely find something that is quite shootable. Although pickings are a little slim now, all the Greek rackers there will fit the CMP description of a rack grade rifle: "Wood will be sound, but well used, with cracks, poor fit, and many dents and gouges.  Throat erosion will be 5 or more and muzzle wear may be over a 3 on a muzzle gauge." It's just that when the first Greeks rack grades came out, they were priced at $295 and often had much better numbers - so I think many got the mindset that there were greeks with service grade barrels that could be had for rack grade prices. (FWIW, I showed up on the first day the Greeks were put out and wound up with some rack grades that had numbers of around 1.5-2 with dark bores that cleaned up nicely.)

FWIW, the North Store just put out some Danish Field Grades today - I skipped out of work early and came home with a 2.8 million SA with a MW and TE of 1 and a 1.09 million SA with a MW of 1 and TE of 1.5. A little bit of cleaning and these two show promise of being some pretty good shooters.

Thanks for the heads up. I suppose by the time I have have my money (tax check in a few weeks) they will be gone/picked over...

Nice job.  I'm going up there in a month or so to stock up on ammo, but if they've got Garands like that up there....I guess I can get more ammo later!

Steel yourself for the fact that you might not come home with a rifle.  I drove six hours to pick out a rifle and was delayed by the "instant" background check.  A week later I had my rifle mailed to me, but the wait was hard.

Was there this afternoon right before closing. If you show up first thing, I think you'll find something worth taking home.
