I know that if you have a 5.56 rifle that you can shoot .223 in it.  Supposedly you can't shoot 5.56 in a .223 rifle, but lots of people say they do.

Anyway, since this is a forum for M14 clones, my question relates to .308/7.62 NATO.  What is the scoop on this as relates to what I said above.

.308 rifle shoots both or 7.62 NATO rifle shoots both?

I have a bolt gun that is .308 and a bolt gun that is 7.62 (SMLE 2A).  All my semiautos are 7.62 except my AR10T.  It has a match chamber and I believe it is a .308 rifle, but I have shot both in it with no problem.  Same with my AR10A4 with the SS barrel and match chamber.

So, what is the deal?

"While the .308 Winchester and 7.62 × 51 mm cartridges are generally identical, there are minor differences in their case dimensions and chambering specifications that should be noted. The 7.62 × 51 mm is smaller by a few thousandths of an inch in some dimensions. This can lead to excessive chamber pressures if a .308 Winchester cartridge is fired in a 7.62 × 51 mm chamber. However, the opposite should present no problems."

So, based on that, it would be okay to fire 7.62 in a .308 rifle, but not .308 in a 7.62 rifle.

you can do both, but I wouldn't make a habit of shooting 308 in a 7.62mm rifle.  This is to say you can hunt with your M1A or AR10 just fine, but I wouldnt go buying 308 ammo in bulk and blasting with it

Everything depends on the headspace. If a M14 type rifle (or any rifle) is headspaced to 308 specs then it can shoot 308 and 7.62. Where trouble starts is where the headspace goes above the 308 specs and 308 ammo is shot.

1.630-1.638 is good for 308
1.634-1.644 is good for 7.62

Edit, The last LRB rifle I received from Warbird has a tag on it "Headspace 1.636". This is a good headspace for all ammo.
