So, I have this rifle. It is a SA Greek return from the CMP. I love the rifle as is and want to leave it as is since it is my only M1. It is in good condition and a good shooter.

I have another M1 coming from the CMP this week. I was going to take that one and send it to Warbird's shop and get the tanker conversion done on it. Than I was going to add one of the scout scope mounts to it.

Img is from fulton-armory.com and it costs $130.

But I have hit a snag. I ended up buying a welder for a hell of a deal, and now must sell one of my M1's.

I will not tanker my one and only, but what about the scope mount on a standard garand?

Should I at least get the mount, in hopes that one day I will get a tanker? Has anyone added one of these to there M1, and how do you like it?
Thanks for the help.

I don't care for it personally unless it was an M1C or M1D.  However, if you don't have to drill holes in the reciever or anything, it shouldn't be a big deal.  You could always take the mount off and have it in original form.  Even drilling holes in the barrel would be no big deal, as barrels need replaced eventually anyway.  Just as long as it's not a collectible, rare barrel, you should be good to go.

Perhaps something like this LaRue mount put on "backwards", you could use a traditional scope.

   Just a thought

think again.... how would he load it?

Ugh... Brain fart

personally i think it's a waste of time/money to do something like that to a garand.  they never were supposed to be tacti-cool, and rail mounted scopes/aimpoints/lights/lasers/NGV/coffee makers just look silly on there.  take that $130 and start a fund saving up for a 18" M1A.  It will do a lot more of what you want it to do, and look better (or more in character) in the long run.

Leave it alone and save up for an M1A.

I don't know, I took mine hunting last year, and really would've liked something like that with an optic on it. Yet I love the way the garand handles.  Of course, that'll screw that up.  But I say do it if it doesn't hurt anything.  It can always be put back to normal.  It is a little bubba ish, but you know, sometimes it's fun to do stuff like that.  It would also help you see how accurate it really is with a scope on there.

While I personally wouldn't change a thing about my Garand, you are free to do anything you wish to it.  It is your rifle and you should be able to do what you want.

Just wait and buy another one later to modify or buy another platform gun to work on and modify.
I want to buy an AK to modify with all the cool parts but I will not dare touch my Norinco pre-94 56S.

You want a short barrel.... buy a SOCOM or a M1A scout.......... mess with a Garand and you WILL go straight to hell.... do not pass go.... do NOT collect $200.....

OK, I am not going to send it in for a tanker, but the scope and mount don't  alter the rifle in any way.

Don't tankerize a complete Garand, use one of the re-parked receivers or a non-matching woodless dane.

I'm pretty sure the scout mount doesn't do any permanent harm, so go for it. You might want to go all the way and get a synthetic stock and keep all 3 wood stock parts together in a safe place for when you decide to convert back to standard issue.
