I just bought my first Garand (#710XXXX) at a gunshow and the first thing I wanted to do is strip it down and give her a good once over. Everything went as it should except for the sticking gas plug. I did find the gas plug combi-tool in the butt stock but man is that plug in there snug. This weapon does not appear to be overly shot so I cant imagine that much of a carbon build up. Any good ideas on removing the plug? Thanks in advance. |

you sure you don't have 1 too many X's in that SN? there is no such thing as an authentic garand with a 7 million SN AFIK. www.fulton-armory.com/tea/m1serial.htm |
7 mil is a SA INC repro, there young Jedi. To remove tight gas plug: Get large adjustable crescent wrench. Adjust it to fit cyp lock/sight area (lightly pad with thin cardboard or leather)> Get a ratchet handle and a 1/4 inch adaptor. (The 1/4 adaptor exactly fits the plug) Use the ratchet in conjunction with the large wrench and remove the screw. The wrench transfers the torque to the threads instead of sideloading the barrel splines. Note: you should torque the plug back down for best accuracy. You will never get it tight enough with just a screwsriver, and it will shoot loose after 2 or 3 clips, and your groups will double or more in size. |

Thank you, got it! Sorry for any confusion, I didn't think I represented that I bought a vintage Garand but I'm sorry if I led you so. Yes it is a newer production model from SA and so far I'm very happy with the way it looks and functions, now it's off to the range. Google to the rescue - 15 foot/pounds. - Thx to all and wish me luck. |
