A few years back, when Elite K9 was selling "USGI" magazine bodies, I bought several.  Sometime later, I ordered the "usgi" spring, follower, and floorplate kits they sold, and assembled the mags.  I've used a few of them and they haven't given me any problems.  I went shooting today and took 3 mags, 2 of which I was sure haven't been used.

The 2 brand new mags were failing terribly.  There is one problem with them.  The rounds are "nose down", with the tip of the bullet not even clearing the magazine sometimes, and the base of the round at the top of the mag like normal, so the bolt is just hitting the base and stopping.

The mags are CMI, or look like it, unmarked with all the correct features, including the horizontal line on the latch.  The follower does sound quite gritty when pushed down, and when I loaded the mags, about the 5th round or so was harder to load, and by the 11th round they were quite difficult.  As I said earlier, some of the mags from the same batch work great.

Is this a follower, spring, or body issue?  Or a combination?

Josh,
Count the coils in the "USGI" spring and take a look at your follower for manufacturer's markings. Post your findings.

Is the magazine spring hanging straight down from the follower or is it headed to one side or the other with it removed from the tube/body?  How many weld dimples on the follower?  Is the spring installed correctly or is it reversed back to front?  Does the spring have any surface defects?

Did a quick comparo between one of my good mags and the bad ones from today.  The good mag and 1 bad one have BW followers, the other bad one has no markings, all with 3 dimples.  The spring on the good mag was canted slightly to the rear of the follower, but the bad mags springs were tilted much more.  I also opened up another mag, not sure if I have used it yet or not.  It also has an unmarked follower(that I can tell), but the mag spring hangs much straighter than the springs on the bad mags.

Those are not USGI or CMI magazine springs.  Replace the springs when I do my next NON-PROFIT non-commercial Different's Spring Fling.
