Ok, I did it, I ordered up a field grade rifle, which I was thinking about re-stocking and reparkerizing, possibly even new barrel. I decided that I will leave it for the time being and also ordered a refinished stripped reciever that I will build up to be a shooter. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get everything else I'll need? For a stock I was looking at Boyds, and I've kinda perused the Fulton Armory sight looking at their barrels and parts. Hopefully they will be waiting for me when I get home |

Part of the fun is deciding what to do next. Original or modified with new parts...shoot them, cherish them and then when you are old pass them on to the next generation!!! Main point is it's YOUR rifle!! Lots of companies will build or help you build exactly what you want!!!! I only go to the meetings that require me to be there!!!! |

I recently purchased a Greek Field Grade myself and mine looks great; there's also a range report and pics/video to help you decide. Personally, I would leave it as it is, the Garand is rifle with a soul and IMHO, should be left untouched; if you want to do that to a rifle, then get a Woodless Dane and by all means do it, but the Field Grade? Leave it as it is, you'll thank me later. CHeck out my post here: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=6&t=205856 |
Go HERE. THey also sell all the tools to maintain and build your rifle. Enjoy the project. |
First thing is to get Jerry Kuhnhausens book ".30 Cal Service Rifles, a shop manual" Kuhnhausen is the "man" when it comes to exact schematics and measurements. Personally I wouldn't do a barrel replacement myself, as I would trust it to an armorer smith. In the Garand Coillectors Assoc magazine you'll find numerous guys that are armorers that do the "proper" work on Garands. Parts...numrich arms, garandguy dot com, fulton , and check ebay for sellers of parts. I also echo getting a woodless for parts, however you run into the possibility of getting a good woodless which then gives you the opportunity to have two shooters You might want to check in with the guys at www.ambackforum.com this is the old battlerifles site and the Garand group there are helpful. Get home safe |

Thanks much for the links and names. Like I said, I want to build the stripped reciever up into something that will shoot. I am planning on having a pro mount the barrel, but I think I should be fine to do the rest. I will look up that book,...I might have some reading time over here. |
| i wouldnt start planning on what parts to get until after I saw the rifle. you may never know, but you might luck out and get a good barrel or good wood. Now, there are two definitions of "good"... either in good condition, or original to the gun. As far as barrels are concerned, I bought a new Criterion barrel from the CMP for my greek return FG. |
AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!![]() Ok, if everyone reads my post, I am planning on leaving the field grade alone, and am looking for information on where to get parts to build up the stripped reparkerized reciever that I ordered as well. STRIPPED reciever, it has nothing, NOTHING I tell you, and I would not destroy it's soul...it is already stripped and refinished, it has no soul...no sights, bolt, barrel or nothing. The field grade has a soul, I will leave it alone... ok sorry, I had a bad day. thanks for all the help and links |

If you're going to build from a stripped receiver, then I would suggest a woodless as a start. Part that one out and then move on for a new barrel and stock and park job. DGR has done some very fine work and as of yet I'd not heard any negatives about what he produces. Check out the Hybrid stocks...wow Garand Porn |
