So how much work and special tools are reqired to make one of the stripped barreled recivers into a working rifle? What about the stripped receivers? Is there a website that might have some details on doing it. Thanks zeekh

Hmmm, I was thinking about this too, just my gestimates on prices

barrel (if you got just an action)    150-200
gas cylinder                                100
gas plug                                     20
rear sight                                    50
op rod                                        100
trigger assm                                50
bolt                                            55
op rod spring                               7
front sight                                   5
follower arm                                 7
follower                                       10
wood                                           150
metal for wood                              30
op rod catch                                  15

Thats $600-750 right there not counting the reciever and small parts

An alternative is to buy a $300 barreled action and a 350 rack grade or $295 woodless danish rack grade and move all the parts over, buy replacement wood and sell the rack grade action for $150.

so 600 for the two guns from cmp, plus 150 for wood, minus 150 for selling the old action, gets you a service grade with mismatched parts and finish for $600 bucks.  Not to mention the couple of parts that are too worn anyhow and need to be replaced like the springs and such.

I have been thinking about it, but if I got another M1 for a build I think I'd want a new match barrel and have a shop build the rifle for me, so all the NM mods are done right and the stock bedded.

just my thought for what it's worth

EDITED to add; tools, nothing special if the action is already barreled, headspace gage really or you could just have your local gunsmith check the headspace.  everything else is just about drop on.

I don't know a website, but the book " The M1 Garand complete assembly guide" by Walt Kuleck and Clint McKee has just about everything including how to install barrels.  The book is cheap, about $20.  CMP sells the receiver wrench to install a barrel, i think a set of barrel vise blocks too IIRC.

To install a barrel, you will need an action block and barrel wrench.  Since the barrel will be short chambered by about .010", you will also need a chamber reamer and headspace gauges.

You may be better off to go to the CMP store and hand pick a Greek rack grade ($425) or a Danish less wood ($295) and buy a new stock set for it.  That will keep your cost under $600.

So the woodless Garand you speak of. Would that be a "Barreled Receiver"? I don't see "Woodless Dane" listed on their website.

About half way down the page.

"M1 Garand, Springfield Armory, Less Wood "

Field-grades are $425; rack-grades are $395.

Unless you had the parts arleady lying around to make a build, I rather go with a woodless Dane since it comes will all the parts minus the wood and stock/handguard metal.

Get what you can afford.

I bought a field grade greek the first of the year. Barrel is te 1 and m.me of 1.5. Lucked out with it.

The only thing I have had to do to it was change the clip spring and front handguard.

Now if you are looking to build, get the danish less wood. Check the barrel and if it is good then just buy yourself a good stock. At least you can use it as a parts gun for that receiver. The final price would proubly be higher buying ththe parts seperately.

Me, I'm thinking of building a 308 garand but it will have to wait. I just spent 600 bucks to fix my truck.
