I recently re-enlisted, and I think part of my bonus will go toward securing a piece of history: an M1 Garand. It's a rifle I definitely want to shoot, too. From the descriptions, I'm currently leaning toward the Service Grade. Could any of you who have bought M1s from the CMP chime in with some info? I also have a couple of questions ... I've heard they deliver to your door, but I live in the barracks on post. Would it be okay to have it shipped to a friend's house? Also, are they packed pretty heavily with cosmoline? How hard is it to clean up before you're ready to fire it? |

Firstly I thank you wholeheartedly for your re-enlistment. I'd go service grade over field grade. When you complete your order form you can give a shipping address after your home address. Rifles are test fired prior to shipping out, a field strip and cleaning is what i'd suggest. Enjoy. |

Just got mine yesterday, required my signature for delivery. Not a lot of cosmoline (minimal>>), not like the SKS I bought. Packed in foam egg crate material inside a sturdy cardboard box. FedEx guy said have fun, must not be his first. ETA: CMP=Good people E-mail back from them already, new safety is in the mail. Could take a week because of the holiday. |

I would have it shipped to a friend's house that lives off post. Another option (last resort), although not at all necessary, you could have it shipped to a gunshop in your area. I'm assuming they would have to log it into their FFL books and maybe charge you a fee for the service. |
An excellent idea, and thanks for serving. As stated, CMP delivers right to your (your friend's) door, bypassing any FFL. Hang out at the CMP Forum for more info. The Ask Orest board is routinely answered directly by the CMP Chief Operating Officer, Michael Orest. CMP service imho is first rate, as is their EStore system. Superb communications. I recently got my SA correct 5.8 million in 30 days. Another guy posted his took 19 days!

voilsb, depending on Ft Lewis, your CO and When I was stationed with TACAMO at Tinker I had Springfield Armory deliver a 1911 they fixed to the duty office. I cleared it with my CO and base security. The E9 that ran security told me that he wanted it in the armory as soon as it was received. Never hurts to ask. |
