I can't sight in my Garand the "correct" way by using the front sight windage to get on zero. The bolt for the front sight wont move. I can't get a lot of leverage, but I can put a lot of force on the allen wrench. I don't know if this is normal or not, but I'm afraid I'm gonna strip the bolt head or the wrench. Either: the bolt is rusted the bolt is red locktited the bolt is was really crammed down by a gorilla Any suggestions? I'm gonna try a propane torch on the bolt head next, if nobody has any other ideas. John |

Apply the Kroil or another good penetrating fluid and let soak for a day or two. Buy a NEW, high quality Allen wrench, NOT a used one or a cheap one. Put the front of the gun in a padded vise so the gas cylinder can't move. Clean out the front sight screw's wrench hole to be sure nothing's in there, and use a little solvent to remove all lube from the hole. Warm the front sight. WARM to the touch, NOT hot. Just warm it to the point it's just a little uncomfortable to hold it in your hand. DO NOT overheat, it won't do any good. Insert the NEW Allen wrench into the hole and tap it in gently with a small hammer to be sure it's fully seated. You want the wrench on the left side of the barrel at about 10:00 o'clock as you look down the barrel. Put the heel of your hand on the the wrench and press down hard until it breaks loose. If all else fails, you can drill out the head of the cap screw with a drill, which will release tension and allow removing the sight. |
That's your Plan "A" and Plan "B". Would emphasize supporting gas cyl so that no torque is transmitted to barrel splines. |
