I have a Universal M1 carbine(no comments) that I got for a really good deal. I bought it for $150. Like new condition. Has 1 problem. Any mag other than a commercial 5 rd will not stay in the mag well. I can put a 10 rd USGI mag in it and it will stay locked until after I pull the bolt back. When I release the bolt, as its moving forward, the clip comes out. Could this be the slide? Anyone have this problem before?
Thanks

The problem most likely is either the mag catch or the locking tab on the mag. Make sure that the mag catch is fully engaging the locking tab after you seat the mag. visually inspect it. Then shoot it and see what happens.

Also, what's with the 5 and 10 round Mags? G.I mags came in 15 and 30 rounds. The vast majority of M1 carbine aftermarket mags are junk. Combine those with a Universal carbine and you're asking for headaches.

I have tried what you said and all was in good condition. I ment that I tried a 15 rd mag USGI along with a 5, 10, and 30 rd mag. The only mag to stay put is a after market mag. The mag catch is in good shape and it holds the mag tight until I release the bolt. Then click, it falls out.

Sounds like you need to get your calipers out and measure the differences between the box sizes locking tab sizes and anything else that looks like it might be involved in holding the mag. in.

The standard M1 mag catch won't work well with 30 rd mags.  That is why the M2 has an upgraded catch.  I have some listed in the EE.

That said, sounds more like your trigger housing is out of spec, and the mag well is too long.  If you could borrow a trigger group and try the rifle again, you will probably find the problem.  However, it may just be a bad catch.

Sounds like this may be the reason you got such a "good deal".

Without seeing it in person, I would probably try putting a USGI magazine catch in there and try some USGI magazines.

I started to look at the mags that I had and found that there was some dimension differences. I found one mag that would not fall out when the bolt was pulled back. Checked the rest using that mag as a guide. I replaced the mag catch with a NOS m1 catch and found a couple of my other mags now seem to work fine. I plan to replace the catch with a M2 catch as soon as I can get one.  I think that we might have found the problem. Rest of the gun works perfect.
Thanks

UPDATE
I replaced the mag catch with a M2 mag catch and this has fixed the problem. The mags stay nice and tight in the mag well. What a difference a little peice of metal can make. I have a nice shooting gun now.
Thanks AR-WRENCH.

Glad to help.

Sounds like you, indeed, did get a good deal on a nice rifle.

It was a good deal now that it is working well. It is now torn apart waiting a total makeover. Plan to repark her in a military gray park and replace anything that is worn or needs replaced. Going to re- do the wood and make her shine. Will post pictures when finished.
