I just bought a new Boyds stock for my M1 Garand and everything was going well with the assembly until I tried to put the trigger group back into the receiver. The trigger guard wouldn't close fully so I took it back out and tried putting it into the receiver without the stock (to make sure that I hadn't improperly re-assembled the rifle) and it fit fine. So I tried it with the stock again and just knocked down the trigger guard into place with my hand. OK, it function checked fine, but then when I tried to disassemble it again the trigger guard would not come back out...no matter how hard I tried to get it to un-latch. Any suggestions? I think I'll fire some rounds out of it and see if the recoil will loosen it up. I'm pretty sure the rifle and the stock are fine overall, so I'm not really worried about that (maybe I should be...). Anyone else have this problem, or knows of a fix? Thanks, JZ |
JZ, I make custom M1 and M14 stocks and sometimes the trigger guards get stuck as I'm fitting custom stocks to my actions. I do caution you on putting to much pressure on the trigger guard when your trying to close it as you can damage your rifle. Starting from a clear and safe weapon, turn the Garand upside down and pointing away from you. Wrap some masking tape around the shaft of a stout screw driver, as not to mar the finish on your trigger guard. Put it through the trigger guard behind the trigger. Grasp the handle and end of the screwdriver and apply steady, building rearward and slightly upward pressure on the back of the trigger guard. Apply just enough pressure to make it snap out of it's catch. Dissasemble as usual. Take care, Tony |

Ah yes, I did the same thing with my Garand stock I ot from Boyds. I had minor fitting and shaping to do and didn't even think about thesting how tight the lock up was. I finished the stock, Tung Oil and the whole bit and smacked the trigger gaurd home, nuce tight lock up and everything was good to go but it wasn't coming apart. I finally looped a length of rope through the trigger gaurd, tied the ends and slide a 2x4 throught the loop. Stoud on the 2x4 with the rope under it and jerked up, took 3 tries but it came out. Still nice tight fit but at least I can get it apart. Karsten |
